Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 21

Number 20

Subject: Maths | Class: Playgroup | Series: Skillford

Overview

This lesson introduces the number 20. Learners look at the big picture of twenty gifts on page 73, say the name "twenty", and count the gifts together. On the second day they finger-trace and pencil-trace the number 20 on page 74 and colour the outline gifts. On the third day they work through the Activities page. All talk is oral and playful. Learners are not expected to read or write words.

Little Explorers (5 minutes)

  • Hold up ten fingers and ask learners to show ten fingers too
  • Count ten fingers and ten toes together: "Ten fingers and ten toes make twenty."
  • Count them all up to twenty, wiggling each one as you count
  • Say together: "twenty"

Look and Say (10 minutes)

  • Open page 73 and point to the big 20 and the title "Twenty Gifts"
  • Say "twenty" and let learners repeat it
  • Point to the gifts on the paved path and count each row: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
  • Count the four rows: 5, 10, 15, 20
  • Say the colours of the gifts and ribbons: red, blue, yellow, green, pink, orange, purple
  • Point to the garden with flowers and trees around the path
  • Count all the gifts together, touching each one once; say the last number loudly: "twenty!"
  • Ask: "What number comes just before 20?" (19). Say together: "nineteen, twenty"
  • Play "Point to it": say a number between 17 and 20 and learners point to it on a number card

Little Innovators (5 minutes)

  • Show the calculator and press the number keys: first 2, then 0
  • Read the screen aloud: "twenty"
  • Let each learner press the 2 and then the 0 and say "twenty"

Little Builders (4 minutes)

  • Weave a fruit basket from twenty paper strips, counting each strip as it goes in
  • Count the finished strips together up to twenty
  • Show the basket to the group

Wrap-Up (1 minute)

  • Hold up the number card 20 and ask: "What number is this?" Learners say "twenty"
  • Wave goodbye to the gifts: "Bye-bye, gifts!"

Differentiation

  • Support: Let shy learners point or touch instead of saying the number; count with them, one at a time
  • Extension: Ask confident learners to count the gifts on their own, then say what number comes after 20

Day 2: Trace the Number (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook pages 73-74
  • Crayons
  • Pencils
  • Red, blue and yellow crayons
  • Twenty counters
  • Real or paper mangoes (optional)

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Show page 73 again and count the gifts together
  • Say the number name together: "twenty"
  • Draw 20 in the air with a big arm, then a small finger

Little Thinkers (4 minutes)

  • Count twenty mangoes (or counters) in two groups of ten
  • Count the first group to ten, then keep counting through the second group
  • Say together: "two groups of ten make twenty"

Finger Tracing and Colouring (6 minutes)

  • Open page 74 and point to the big white 20 and the outline gifts at the top
  • Count the outline gifts together, touching each one: there are 20
  • Show the stroke for 20: for the 2, draw a full curve at the top, slant down, pause at the bottom line and add the horizontal foot; then for the 0, draw a tall, narrow oval
  • Let the learners run a finger along the big 20

Trace the Number (8 minutes)

  • Hand out pencils and check the grip (pinch the pencil, rest it on the middle finger)
  • Work through the traced rows together, one line at a time
  • Rows 1 and 2: trace the dotted 20, following the green arrows and starting at the dot
  • Rows 3 and 4: learners try to make a 20 from the dot, with your hand over their hand if needed
  • Teacher's Note from the book: draw a full curve at the top and pause at the bottom line before adding the horizontal foot for the 2; for 0, draw a tall, narrow oval
  • Praise every try: "Lovely 20!"

Little Artists (6 minutes)

  • Colour the twenty outline gifts at the top of page 74
  • Count each gift as it is coloured and say its number aloud
  • Ask: "How many gifts did you colour?" Learners say "twenty"

Wrap-Up (1 minute)

  • Draw 20 in the air one last time and say "twenty"
  • Remind parents to finish with the matching pages in the Activity Book

Differentiation

  • Support: Use a thick crayon for tracing; hold the learner's hand for the first row
  • Extension: Let confident learners trace a big 20 on the board with a marker

Day 3: Activities (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 75
  • Pencils and crayons
  • Number cards 20 and 0
  • Pictures of spider webs
  • Twenty counters or dolls

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Count from 1 to 20 together, then say the number name "twenty"
  • Show a number card 20 and ask learners to say it

Activity 1 (7 minutes)

  • Count the spiders on each web together, touching each one
  • Learners circle the web with twenty spiders

Activity 2 (8 minutes)

  • Point to the big blue 20 and the maze: "Join the number 20 to its home."
  • Learners follow the maze from 20 with a finger first and then with a pencil
  • At the end of the maze there are dice-style cards with dots; talk about the dots and count them together

Activity 3 (8 minutes)

  • Point to the dolls in two groups: "How many dolls are there? Write the number in the box."
  • Count the first group of ten, then keep counting through the second group
  • Learners write 20 in the box, following your model, or trace it in the air if they cannot write yet

Wrap-Up (2 minutes)

  • Count the gifts from page 73 one more time
  • Ask: "What number did we learn today?" Learners say "twenty"

Differentiation

  • Support: Count with the learner, touching each item once; cover the part already counted with a piece of paper
  • Extension: Ask confident learners to explain how they know which group is 20

Teaching Tips (from textbook)

  • For 2, direct learners to draw a full curve at the top; when they reach the bottom line, have them pause before changing direction and adding the horizontal foot. For 0, instruct them to draw a tall, narrow oval
  • Let learners touch each item once as they count, so none is counted twice
  • Finish with the matching pages in the Activity Book
