Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 20

Number 19

Subject: Maths | Class: Playgroup | Series: Skillford

Overview

This lesson introduces the number 19. Learners look at the big picture of nineteen stars on page 70, say the name "nineteen", and count the stars together. On the second day they finger-trace and pencil-trace the number 19 on page 71 and colour the outline stars. On the third day they work through the Activities page. All talk is oral and playful. Learners are not expected to read or write words.

Circle Time Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Sit the learners in a circle and sing a hello song together

Little Explorers (5 minutes)

  • Draw or stick nineteen flowers on a chart on the board
  • Count the flowers together, pointing at each one

Look and Say (10 minutes)

  • Open page 70 and point to the big 19 and the title "Nineteen Stars"

  • Point to the nineteen smiling stars in the night sky and count them together; touch each star once and keep a finger on the ones already counted
  • Say the colour of the stars: they are yellow
  • Point to the clouds and little sparkles in the sky; these are not stars to count
  • Count all the stars together, touching each one once; say the last number loudly: "nineteen!"
  • Ask: "What number comes just before 19?" (18). Say together: "eighteen, nineteen"
  • Play "Point to it": say a number between 16 and 19 and learners point to it on a number card

Little Innovators (5 minutes)

  • Show the calculator and type 19: press 1, then 9
  • Read the screen aloud: "nineteen"
  • Press + 1 and = and see what happens: the screen shows 20. Say "twenty" together

Little Builders (4 minutes)

  • Stack nineteen paper cups into a beehive, counting each cup as it goes on
  • Count the finished stack together up to nineteen
  • Ask: "What would we need to make twenty?" (one more)

Wrap-Up (1 minute)

  • Hold up the number card 19 and ask: "What number is this?" Learners say "nineteen"
  • Wave goodbye to the stars: "Bye-bye, stars!"

Differentiation

  • Support: Let shy learners point or touch instead of saying the number; count with them, one at a time
  • Extension: Ask confident learners to count the stars on their own, then say what number comes after 19

Day 2: Trace the Number (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook pages 70-71
  • Crayons
  • Pencils
  • Yellow and blue crayons
  • Nineteen building blocks
  • A twentieth block for the extra challenge

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Show page 70 again and count the stars together
  • Say the number name together: "nineteen"
  • Draw 19 in the air with a big arm, then a small finger

Little Thinkers (4 minutes)

  • Build a tower with nineteen blocks, counting each one aloud
  • Add one more block and count again: "nineteen, twenty"
  • Say together: "nineteen and one more make twenty"

Finger Tracing and Colouring (6 minutes)

  • Open page 71 and point to the big white 19 and the outline stars at the top
  • Count the outline stars together, touching each one: there are 19
  • Show the stroke for 19: draw a straight line from the top down for the 1, then for the 9 start just below the top line, draw a rounded circle, and add a straight line down
  • Let the learners run a finger along the big 19

Trace the Number (8 minutes)

  • Hand out pencils and check the grip (pinch the pencil, rest it on the middle finger)
  • Work through the traced rows together, one line at a time
  • Rows 1 and 2: trace the dotted 19, following the green arrows and starting at the dot
  • Rows 3 and 4: learners try to make a 19 from the dot, with your hand over their hand if needed
  • Teacher's Note from the book: draw a straight line from top to bottom for 1; for 9, start just below the top line, draw a rounded circle, then add a straight line down
  • Praise every try: "Lovely 19!"

Little Artists (6 minutes)

  • Colour the nineteen outline stars at the top of page 71
  • Count each star as it is coloured and say its number aloud
  • Ask: "How many stars did you colour?" Learners say "nineteen"

Wrap-Up (1 minute)

  • Draw 19 in the air one last time and say "nineteen"
  • Remind parents to finish with the matching pages in the Activity Book

Differentiation

  • Support: Use a thick crayon for tracing; hold the learner's hand for the first row
  • Extension: Let confident learners trace a big 19 on the board with a marker

Day 3: Activities (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 72
  • Pencils and crayons

  • Count each group together, pointing at each mouse once
  • Learners draw a line from the right group to the 19

Activity 3 (8 minutes)

  • Point to the wheels in rows: "How many wheels are there? Write the number in the box."
  • Count the wheels together, row by row, from left to right
  • Learners write 19 in the box, following your model, or trace it in the air if they cannot write yet

Wrap-Up (2 minutes)

  • Count the stars from page 70 one more time
  • Ask: "What number did we learn today?" Learners say "nineteen"

Differentiation

  • Support: Count with the learner, touching each item once; cover the part already counted with a piece of paper
  • Extension: Ask confident learners to explain how they know which group is 19

Teaching Tips (from textbook)

  • For 1, direct learners to draw a straight line from top to bottom. For 9, have them start just below the top line, draw a rounded circle, and then add a straight line down
  • Let learners touch each item once as they count, so none is counted twice
  • Finish with the matching pages in the Activity Book
