Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 5
Number 4
Subject: Maths | Class: Playgroup | Series: Skillford
Overview
This lesson introduces the number 4. Learners look at a big picture of four parrots in a sunny garden (a red one, a blue one, a yellow-and-blue one and a green one) and count them. On the second day they trace the number 4, lifting the pencil halfway through. On the third day they colour sheep with four spots, find groups of four sweets and count the balloons Aden is holding. All talk is oral and playful. Learners are not expected to read or write words.
Learning Outcomes (from textbook)

- Building blocks (at least 4 per learner or group)
- A phone or toy phone with number keys
- A cat, dog and cow picture or toy animals
Circle Time Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Sit the learners in a circle and sing a hello song together
- Hold up four fingers and say "four!" Learners copy
- Count 1, 2, 3, 4 together, tapping a knee for each number
- Draw a big 4 in the air with your finger and say "four" each time
Little Explorers (5 minutes)
- Show a toy cat, dog and cow, or pictures of them
- Ask: "How many legs does a cat have?" Count the legs together: 1, 2, 3, 4
- Do the same for the dog and the cow
- Say together: "Four legs, four legs, four!"
Look and Say (10 minutes)
- Open page 22 and point to the big pink 4
- Point to the cloud and say "Four Parrots". Learners repeat
- Touch each parrot once and count together: the red parrot is 1, the blue parrot is 2, the yellow-and-blue parrot is 3, the green parrot is 4
- Ask: "How many parrots?" Learners say "four"
- Point to the Student's Learning Outcomes box and tell the learners that today they will find 4, count four things and trace 4
- Play "Show me four": say "four" and learners hold up four fingers
Little Innovators (5 minutes)
- Show a phone keypad (a real phone or a picture of one)
- Ask learners to find 4 on the keypad and point to it
- Press 4 four times together, counting aloud: 1, 2, 3, 4
Little Builders (4 minutes)
- Give out building blocks
- Build a table on four block legs
- Take one leg away and ask: "Can it stand on three?" Let learners try and tell you what happens
Wrap-Up (1 minute)
- Hold up four fingers and ask: "How many?" Learners say "four"
- Wave goodbye to the parrots: "Bye-bye, parrots!"
Differentiation
- Support: Let shy learners hold up four fingers instead of saying the number; count with them
- Extension: Ask confident learners to count four things around the room and show you
Day 2: Trace the Number (30 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook pages 22-23
- Crayons (red, blue, yellow, green)
- Pencils
- A tray of sand or salt for finger tracing
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Show page 22 again. Count the four parrots together
- Hold up four fingers and say "four"
- Sing a counting song up to 4
Little Thinkers (4 minutes)
- Ask: "What has four legs?" Take answers such as a chair, a table or a cat
- Count the legs of a chair in the classroom, touching each leg: 1, 2, 3, 4
- Do the same for a table
Finger Tracing (6 minutes)
- Open page 23 and point to the big white 4 at the top
- Show the stroke: slant down to the left, then go straight across to the right
- Lift your pencil or finger. Then draw a straight line down from the top
- Let the learners run a finger along the 4 in the sand tray, saying "slant, across, lift, down"
Trace the Number (8 minutes)
- Hand out pencils and check the grip (pinch the pencil, rest it on the middle finger)
- Work through the traced rows together, one line at a time
- Rows 1 and 2: trace the dotted 4, following the green arrows
- Rows 3 and 4: learners try to make a 4 from each arrow, with your hand over their hand if needed
- Teacher's Note from the book: writing this number needs the learners to lift their pencil halfway through. Remind them that the second stroke should cut through the first, leaving a little tail on the horizontal line
- Praise every try: "Lovely 4!"
Little Artists (6 minutes)
- Look at the four parrots in the picture at the top of page 23
- Colour the four parrots with crayons. Colour one parrot red, one blue, one yellow and one green, or any colours the learners like
- As they work, ask: "How many parrots?" Learners say "four"
Wrap-Up (1 minute)
- Draw 4 in the air one last time and say "four"
- Remind parents to finish with the matching pages in the Activity Book
Differentiation
- Support: Use a thick crayon for tracing; hold the learner's hand for the first row
- Extension: Let confident learners draw a big 4 on the board with a marker
Day 3: Activities (30 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 24
- Crayons
- Counters or blocks
- Four balloons (real balloons or paper cut-outs)
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Count to 4 together with claps
- Ask: "Show me four fingers." Check each learner
Colour the Sheep (7 minutes)
- Open page 24 and look at the four sheep
- Each sheep has white circles on its wool. Count the circles on the first sheep together, touching each one
- Ask learners to find the sheep which have 4 spots and colour them
- Check by counting the spots aloud: 1, 2, 3, 4
Find the Groups of Four (8 minutes)
- Point to the big pink 4 in the middle of the page
- Look at each group of sweets and jellies and count them together
- Ask: "Is this a group of four?" Learners say yes or no
- Join each group of four to the 4 with a crayon line
How Many Balloons? (6 minutes)
- Point to Aden and his balloons
- Count the balloons together by touching each one
- Say: "Aden has four balloons." Learners may write or draw the number 4 in the box
- Hold up four real balloons or paper cut-outs and count them as well
Little Builders (3 minutes)
- Give each learner a handful of blocks
- Ask them to build a tower of exactly four blocks and count it
Wrap-Up (1 minute)
- Hold up four fingers and say "four!"
- Praise the learners for their counting
Differentiation
- Support: Count with the learner, guiding their finger to touch each object once
- Extension: Ask confident learners to say which groups on the page do not have four and say how many they have
Teaching Tips (from textbook)
- Writing this number requires learners to lift the pencil midway through
- Remind learners that the second stroke should cut through the first, leaving a little tail on the horizontal line
