Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 4
Number 3
Subject: Maths | Class: Playgroup | Series: Skillford
Overview
This lesson introduces the number 3. Learners look at a big red 3 beside three dolls sitting on a shelf in a cosy toy room. On the second day they finger-trace and pencil-trace the number 3 beside three dolls to colour. On the third day they circle the plates with 3 fruits, find the groups of three and count three turtles. All talk is oral and playful. Learners are not expected to read or write words.

Wrap-Up (1 minute)
- Clap three times, stamp three times, then count three toys out loud
- Wave goodbye to the dolls: "Bye-bye, dolls!"
Differentiation
- Support: Let shy learners hold up three fingers instead of saying the word; say it with them
- Extension: Ask confident learners to find three things in the classroom and say "three" without help
Day 2: Trace the Number (30 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook pages 19-20
- Crayons
- Pencils
- A tray of sand
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Show page 19 again. Point and say: "Three dolls"

- Clap three times, stamp three times
Little Artists: Sand Tracing (5 minutes)
- Ask learners to trace a big 3 in the sand tray with one finger
- Show the stroke: start at the top left, curve round to the middle, pause, then curve round again to the bottom
- Wipe the sand smooth and let them try again
Look at Page 20 (5 minutes)
- Open page 20 and point to the big white 3 and the words "Three Dolls"
- Point to the three dolls and count: one, two, three
- Read the Teacher's Note: after the top curve, pause briefly before changing direction. Then try to draw a second curve that matches the first one
Trace the Number (12 minutes)
- Hand out pencils and check the grip (pinch the pencil, rest it on the middle finger)
- Work through the rows one line at a time
- Rows 1 and 2: trace the dotted 3 and follow the green arrows: top curve, pause, then the second curve
- Rows 3 and 4: learners make a 3 from each dot, following the arrows, with your hand over their hand if needed
- Praise every try: "Lovely two curves!"
Wrap-Up (3 minutes)
- Draw 3 in the air one last time and say "three"
- Remind learners that the Arts card says to colour the three dolls at the top of page 20
Differentiation
- Support: Use a thick crayon for tracing; hold the learner's hand for the first row
- Extension: Let confident learners draw a big 3 on the board with a marker
Day 3: Activities (30 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 21
- Crayons or pencils
- Small items in threes (for example three blocks)
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Hold up three blocks and count: "one, two, three"
- Clap three times and say "three"
- Say "three dolls" together
Activity 1: Circle the Plates (7 minutes)
- Open page 21 and read the first instruction aloud: "Circle the plates which have 3 fruits on them"
- Point to the five plates one at a time and count the fruits together
- Learners circle the two plates with exactly three fruits (the top two plates)
Activity 2: Groups of Three (8 minutes)
