Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 2

Number 1

Subject: Maths | Class: Playgroup | Series: Skillford

Overview

This lesson introduces the number 1. Learners look at a big pink 1 beside a friendly elephant carrying a bunch of flowers in its trunk, and learn that one means a single thing. On the second day they finger-trace and pencil-trace the number 1 beside a sitting baby elephant. On the third day they colour the cakes with 1 candle, find the groups of one and count the parts of a face. All talk is oral and playful. Learners are not expected to read or write words.

Learning Outcomes (from textbook)

  • Recognise the number 1 and say its name
  • Count one object
  • Trace and write the number 1

Key Vocabulary

  • one
  • elephant
  • nose
  • mouth
  • head

Page Label

  • "One Elephant"

Day 1: Look and Say (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 13
  • One block, one ball and one cup
  • Building blocks
  • A tablet or screen with a number keypad (or a calculator)

Circle Time Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Sit the learners in a circle and sing a hello song together
  • Hold up one finger and say "one" together
  • Draw a tall straight 1 in the air with your finger and ask learners to copy you
  • Say "one" three times, getting louder each time

Little Explorers (5 minutes)

  • Science card: say "We have one nose and one mouth"
  • Ask learners to touch their nose and say "one"
  • Ask learners to touch their mouth and say "one"
  • Ask: "How many heads do we have?" Learners touch their head and say "one"

Look and Say (10 minutes)

  • Open page 13 and point to the big pink 1. Say "one" and learners repeat
  • Point to the elephant and say "one elephant". Learners repeat
  • Ask: "What is the elephant holding in its trunk?" Learners say "flowers"
  • Say together: "One elephant"
  • Point to the elephant's scarf and ask what colours learners can see
  • Play "Show me one": say "show me one" and learners hold up one finger, one toy or one block

Little Innovators (4 minutes)

  • Technology card: show a phone keypad or calculator, point to 1 and press it once
  • Let each learner come up and press 1 once

Little Builders (5 minutes)

  • Engineering card: stand one block on its end
  • Ask: "Can one block stand up on its own?" Let learners try
  • Say together: "One block"

Wrap-Up (1 minute)

  • Clap once, jump once, hop once, saying "one" each time
  • Wave goodbye to the elephant: "Bye-bye, elephant!"

Differentiation

  • Support: Let shy learners hold up one finger instead of saying the word; say it with them
  • Extension: Ask confident learners to find one thing in the classroom and say "one" without help

Day 2: Trace the Number (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook pages 13-14
  • Crayons
  • Pencils
  • A tray of sand

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Show page 13 again. Point and say: "One elephant"
  • Hold up one finger and say "one" together
  • Clap once, jump once

Little Artists: Sand Tracing (5 minutes)

  • Ask learners to trace a big 1 in the sand tray with one finger
  • Show the stroke: start at the top and go straight down
  • Wipe the sand smooth and let them try again

Look at Page 14 (5 minutes)

  • Open page 14 and point to the big white 1 and the words "One Elephant"
  • Point to the sitting baby elephant and say "one elephant"
  • Read the Teacher's Note: draw a straight line from the top to the bottom. The challenge is making the line as upright as possible, so it does not slant to one side

Trace the Number (12 minutes)

  • Hand out pencils and check the grip (pinch the pencil, rest it on the middle finger)
  • Work through the rows one line at a time
  • Rows 1 and 2: trace the dotted lines from the top dot to the bottom, following the green arrow
  • Rows 3 and 4: learners draw a straight line down from each top dot, with your hand over their hand if needed
  • Praise every try: "Lovely straight 1!"

Wrap-Up (3 minutes)

  • Draw 1 in the air one last time and say "one"
  • Remind learners that the Arts card says to colour the one elephant at the top of page 14

Differentiation

  • Support: Use a thick crayon for tracing; hold the learner's hand for the first row
  • Extension: Let confident learners draw a long straight 1 on the board with a marker

Day 3: Activities (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 15
  • Crayons or pencils

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Hold up one block and say "one block"
  • Hold up one cup and say "one cup"
  • Touch your nose, mouth and head and say "one" each time

Activity 1: Colour the Cakes (7 minutes)

  • Open page 15 and read the first instruction aloud: "Colour the cakes which have 1 candle"
  • Point to the six cakes one at a time and count the candles together
  • Learners colour the cakes with exactly one candle (the first, the fourth and the last)

Activity 2: Groups of One (8 minutes)

  • Read the second instruction: "Find the groups of one. Join them to the 1"
  • Point to the four pictures: a red car, a pair of blue shoes, two parrots and a mango
  • Count the things in each picture together
  • Learners join the groups of one to the pink 1 in the middle

Activity 3: Count and Write (7 minutes)

  • Read the third instruction: "Count and write the number"
  • Look at the picture of the boy and ask: "How many noses? How many mouths? How many heads?"
  • Learners write 1 on each line, or say "one" and point

Wrap-Up (3 minutes)

  • Play "One of these": hold up groups of one, two and three blocks. Learners stand up when they see one
  • Praise the group

Differentiation

  • Support: Count each cake's candles with your finger, one at a time
  • Extension: Ask learners to find one thing in the picture on page 13 that is different from the others, such as the one elephant

Teaching Tips (from textbook)

  • Draw a straight line from the top to the bottom for 1
  • The challenge is making the line as vertical as possible, so it does not slant to one side
  • Colour the one elephant at the top of the next page
