Hello, little friends! Welcome to our maths lesson. Today we are going to meet a new number. It is the number zero!

Look at this big yellow number. This is zero. Can you say it with me? Zero!

Now look at the picture. There is a beautiful pond with sparkling water. Can you see the little ripples? Look at the words in the picture. They say Zero Fish. Let us look very carefully. How many fish can you see in the pond? None! Zero fish. Zero means none. Zero means nothing at all.

Let us say it together. Zero means none. Zero means nothing at all. Well done!

Now I have a plate. On my plate there are three toys. One, two, three. Now I take one away. How many now? Two! I take one more away. How many now? One! And now I take the last one away. How many toys are on my plate? Zero! There is nothing on the plate. The plate is empty.

Did you know that a snake has zero legs? A snake slides on its tummy and it has no legs at all. Zero legs!

Let us count down like a rocket. Are you ready? Three, two, one, zero. Blast off! Wonderful!

Now it is time to trace the number zero. Hold up your finger. Let us draw zero in the air.

Start at the top. Go round to the left and down. Come back up on the other side, all the way to the top. That is the number zero!

Let us do it again. Start at the top. Round and down. Back up. Zero!

One more time, nice and slow. Round, down and up. Well done!

Your teacher says that zero is a skinny letter O. It is not a fat round circle. It is tall and thin, like an egg standing up. Let us make a skinny zero together.

When you trace zero in your book, always start at the dot. Go slowly and carefully. Take your time.

On the next page there is an empty fish bowl. How many fish are in the bowl? Zero! Nothing is in the bowl at all.

Then you will have some fun activities. Look at the three plates. One plate has a whole pizza. One plate has a slice of pizza. And one plate has nothing on it. Circle the plate with nothing on it. That plate shows zero!

Look at the boxes too. Some boxes have a toy inside. Some boxes are empty. Join the empty boxes to the zero. And look at the birds in the golden cages. One cage is empty. Join the empty cage to the zero.

Let us remember what we learned today. The number zero is called zero.

Zero means none. Zero means nothing at all.

To make zero, we go round and down and back up to the top, in a skinny shape.
