Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 1

Number 0

Subject: Maths | Class: Playgroup | Series: Skillford

Overview

This lesson introduces the number 0. Learners look at a big yellow 0 beside a sparkling pond and meet the idea that zero means none, nothing at all. On the second day they finger-trace and pencil-trace the number 0 beside an empty fish bowl. On the third day they find the plate with nothing on it, the empty boxes and the empty cage. All talk is oral and playful. Learners are not expected to read or write words.

Learning Outcomes (from textbook)

  • Recognise the number 0 and say its name
  • Understand that zero means none, nothing at all
  • Trace and write the number 0

Key Vocabulary

  • zero
  • none
  • nothing
  • empty

Page Label

  • "Zero Fish"

Day 1: Look and Say (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 10
  • A plate and a few small toys or fruit
  • Building blocks
  • A tablet or screen with a number keypad (or a calculator)
  • A tray of sand

Circle Time Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Sit the learners in a circle and sing a hello song together
  • Hold up one finger, then two, then three, and say each number with the group
  • Close your hand into a fist and say "zero" in a whisper: no fingers at all
  • Ask learners to show you zero fingers and say "zero" with you three times

Look and Say (10 minutes)

  • Open page 10 and point to the big yellow 0. Say "zero" and learners repeat
  • Point to the pond and ask: "What can you see in the water?" Accept answers such as water, ripples and sparkles
  • Point to the words "Zero Fish" and say them together. Ask: "How many fish can you see in the pond?" Learners look hard and say "none, zero"
  • Say together: "Zero means none, nothing at all"
  • Draw a big 0 in the air and ask learners to copy you

Show Me Zero (5 minutes)

  • Put three toys on a plate and count them together: 1, 2, 3
  • Take the toys away one at a time while learners say how many are left
  • When the plate is empty, ask: "How many now?" Learners say "zero"
  • Repeat with a different plate

Little Explorers and Little Innovators (5 minutes)

  • Science card: say "A snake has zero legs" and ask learners to look at a picture of a snake and count its legs: zero
  • Technology card: show a phone keypad or calculator, point to 0 and press it

Little Builders (4 minutes)

  • Give out building blocks and let learners build a small tower
  • Take blocks off one at a time until zero are left
  • Say together: "Zero means none"

Wrap-Up (1 minute)

  • Count down together like a rocket: 3, 2, 1, 0, blast off!
  • Ask: "How many fish in our pond?" Learners say "zero"

Differentiation

  • Support: Let shy learners show a fist for zero instead of saying the word; say it with them
  • Extension: Ask confident learners to give you an example of something there is none of, for example "zero elephants in our room"

Day 2: Trace the Number (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook pages 10-11
  • Crayons
  • Pencils
  • A tray of sand

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Show page 10 again and point to the big yellow 0
  • Say "zero" together and say "zero means none"
  • Count down together: 3, 2, 1, 0

Little Artists: Sand Tracing (5 minutes)

  • Give each learner a sand tray (or a table with a little sand or salt)
  • Ask learners to trace a big 0 with one finger: round and round, no corners
  • Show the shape: start at the top, go round to the left and down, come back up on the right side to the top
  • Wipe the sand smooth and let them try again

Look at Page 11 (5 minutes)

  • Open page 11 and point to the big white 0 and the "Zero Fish" label
  • Point to the fish bowl and ask: "Is there a fish in the bowl?" Learners say "no, zero fish"
  • Read the Teacher's Note: a 0 is a skinny letter O, an oval shape, not a round circle

Trace the Number (12 minutes)

  • Hand out pencils and check the grip (pinch the pencil, rest it on the middle finger)
  • Work through the rows one line at a time
  • Rows 1 and 2: trace the dotted 0 and follow the green arrows
  • Row 3: follow the green arrows without the dots, starting at the dot at the top
  • Row 4: learners try a 0 on their own, starting at the dot, with your hand over theirs if needed
  • Encourage the "skinny letter O" shape and praise every try: "Lovely tall 0!"

Wrap-Up (3 minutes)

  • Draw 0 in the air one last time and say "zero"
  • Ask: "How many fish in the bowl?" Learners say "zero"

Differentiation

  • Support: Use a thick crayon for tracing; hold the learner's hand for the first row
  • Extension: Let confident learners draw a big 0 on the board with a marker

Day 3: Activities (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 12
  • Crayons or pencils
  • A plate, a small box and a basket

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Show learners a plate with a toy on it and an empty plate. Ask: "Which plate has nothing on it?"
  • Say together: "Zero means none, nothing at all"
  • Sing a counting song, then finish with "zero"

Activity 1: Circle the Plate (7 minutes)

  • Open page 12 and read the first instruction aloud: "Circle the plate that has nothing on it"
  • Point to the three plates one at a time and ask what is on each (a whole pizza, nothing, a slice of pizza)
  • Learners circle the empty plate in the middle

Activity 2: Empty Boxes (8 minutes)

  • Read the second instruction: "Find the empty boxes. Join them to the 0"
  • Point to the four boxes and ask what is inside each (nothing, nothing, a ball, a toy truck)
  • Learners draw a line from each empty box to the pink 0 in the middle

Activity 3: Empty Cage (6 minutes)

  • Read the third instruction: "Join the empty cage to the 0"
  • Point to the three cages and ask how many birds are in each: 1, 0 and 2
  • Learners join the empty cage to the 0

Wrap-Up (4 minutes)

  • Play "Is it empty?": hold up a box, a cup or a basket, sometimes with something inside. Learners shout "zero!" when it is empty
  • Praise the group and finish with the rocket count down: 3, 2, 1, 0

Differentiation

  • Support: Point to each picture and ask "Is anything there?" one at a time
  • Extension: Ask learners to say how many birds are in each of the other two cages

Teaching Tips (from textbook)

  • Count down 3, 2, 1, 0 like a rocket. At zero, blast off!
  • A 0 is similar to an upper case letter O except that it is an oval shape instead of a round circle. Encourage your students to draw a "skinny letter O" to get the perfect shape
  • Build a tower, then take blocks off until zero are left. Zero means "none"
