Months of the Year
Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Skillford
Overview
In this lesson children learn that there are 12 months in a year. They read January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November and December, and then unscramble twelve jumbled words to find the months.
Learning Objectives
- Know that there are 12 months in a year
- Read and say the names of the 12 months in order
- Unscramble the letters to find each month
- Write the names of the months correctly
Day 1: The 12 Months (40 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 80, 12 month cards, pencils
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Ask: "When is your birthday?" Let a few children answer.
Main Activity (25 minutes)
- Read the first line: "There are 12 months in a year." Count the months on page 80 together.
- Read the months in order, row by row. Children repeat each month:
- January, February, March
- April, May, June
- July, August, September
- October, November, December
- Remind children that the name of a month begins with a capital letter
- Read the instruction: "Unscramble the letters and find the months of the year."
- Do the twelve words together. Say the sounds, then find the month:
- UARYNAJ = January
- EBRUFARY = February
- CHARM = March
- RILAP = April
- AMY = May
- NEUJ = June
- UYLJ = July
- UGSTUA = August
- MBPTESERE = September
- OBTEROC = October
- MBEERNOV = November
- MBERCDEE = December
- Children write each month on the dotted line
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Give each child a month card. Children stand in a line in the right order and read the months aloud.
Differentiation
- Support: Unscramble the shortest words first (AMY, NEUJ, UYLJ, CHARM, RILAP) with the month list in front of them
- Extension: Children write the month of their birthday and the month before and after it
Teaching Tips
- Say the months in order every day, like a song
- Use the month list on the page to check each answer
- Say each month slowly and clap the syllables: Jan-u-ar-y
