Traffic Signs

Overview

In this lesson children learn about traffic lights and traffic signs. They look at the red light, yellow light and green light, the zebra crossing and nine signs: Right Turn, Left Turn, Two Way Traffic, U Turn, Parking, Stop, No U Turn, No Parking and Airport Ahead. Then they label the picture and match four signs with their words.

Day 1: Lights and Signs (35 minutes)

Materials

• Textbook page 78, drawings or cards of the signs

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

• Ask: "What do we see on the road?" Let children tell you what they know, such as cars and lights.

Main Activity (20 minutes)

• Look at the picture at the top of page 78 and read the labels: Red Light, Yellow Light, Green Light, Zebra Crossing
• Point to the traffic light and the zebra crossing in the picture
• Read the names of the signs one by one. Children repeat and describe the sign:
  • Right Turn, Left Turn, Two Way Traffic
  • U Turn, Parking, Stop
  • No U Turn, No Parking, Airport Ahead
• Point out that the signs with a red line across them say "No" (No U Turn, No Parking)

Wrap-Up (10 minutes)

• Hold up a sign card. Children say its name.

Differentiation

• Support: Practise only the lights and four signs (Stop, Parking, Left Turn, Right Turn) at a time
• Extension: Children describe where we would see a sign, for example "We see Stop at the road."

Day 2: Activity Time (35 minutes)

Materials

• Textbook pages 78 and 79, pencils

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

• Say a sign name. Children point to it on page 78.

Main Activity (20 minutes)

• Read the first instruction on page 79: "Label the picture."
• Look at the traffic light and the zebra crossing in the picture. Children write the names (Red Light, Yellow Light, Green Light, Zebra Crossing) on the lines, using page 78 to help
• Read the second instruction: "Draw a line from the picture to the correct word."
• Read the four words (U Turn, Parking, Left Turn, Two Way Traffic) and match them together:
  1. The P sign -- Parking
  2. The U-shaped arrow -- U Turn
  3. The two arrows up and down -- Two Way Traffic
  4. The left arrow -- Left Turn
• Children draw the lines

Wrap-Up (10 minutes)

• Children act as traffic police: hold up a sign and the class says its name and what to do

Differentiation

• Support: Match the first sign together, then let children match the others
• Extension: Children draw one more sign from page 78 and write its name

Teaching Tips

• Use real traffic lights or drawings to teach the colours of the lights
• Stress that children should always cross the road with a grown-up
• Link back to the lesson on opposite words: go and stop
