Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 54
My Cat
Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Skillford
Overview
In this lesson children read the short text "My Cat" and fill in the blanks about a pet cat: its name, how many legs it has, whether its tail is long or short, what it can climb and what it can catch, and who feeds it. They look at the picture of the cat and write about their own idea of a pet cat.
Learning Objectives
- Read the short text "My Cat"
- Fill in the blanks about a cat
- Choose "long" or "short" for the tail
- Say a sentence about a pet cat
Day 1: Reading and Filling In (40 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 77, pencils
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Ask children: "Have you seen a cat? What does a cat do?" Let a few children answer.
Main Activity (25 minutes)
- Read the text aloud, line by line. Children repeat each line:
- I have a pet cat. My cat has a name.
- Its name is ___ . It has ___ legs.
- It has a long / short tail. It can run fast.
- It can climb ___ . It can catch ___ .
- ___ feed my cat. I like my cat very much.
- Look at the picture of the cat together and talk about what the cat looks like
- Read the blanks one at a time and let children think of an answer. Children choose their own answers, for example:
- Its name is ___ (a name for the cat, such as the name of their own or an imagined pet)
- It has ___ legs (four)
- It has a long / short tail (children circle the one they pick after looking at the picture)
- It can climb ___ (for example trees)
- It can catch ___ (for example mice)
- ___ feed my cat (I or We)
- Children write their answers in the blanks
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Children read their finished text to a partner, starting "I have a pet cat."
Differentiation
- Support: Fill in only the name and the number of legs, then read the sentences with the teacher
- Extension: Children write one more sentence about a pet cat, for example "My cat is soft."
Teaching Tips
- There are many right answers to the blanks. Praise any answer that makes sense.
- Use the picture of the cat to help with the tail and the legs
- "It" and "Its" appear in the text: "It" is the cat, and "Its name" tells whose name
