Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 53
My Family
Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Skillford
Overview
In this lesson children read about Ali and his family: his father is a doctor, his mother is a housewife, he has one brother and one sister, and his grandparents live with them. Children look at the family picture, tick or cross three sentences, and write the name of each person in their own family.
Learning Objectives
- Read about Ali and his family
- Name the members of a family: father, mother, brother, sister, grandparents
- Tick the sentences that are true and cross the ones that are not
- Write the name of each person in their own family
Day 1: Reading About Ali's Family (35 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 76
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Ask children: "Who lives in your house?" Let a few children name people in their family.
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Read the passage aloud and let children repeat each sentence:
- My name is Ali. This is my family.
- My father is a doctor. My mother is a housewife. She looks after us at home.
- I have one brother and one sister. My grandparents live with us too.
- I love my family very much.
- Look at the picture. Ask children to find Ali, his father, his mother, his brother, his sister and his grandparents
- Ask questions:
- What is Ali's father? (a doctor)
- Who looks after them at home? (his mother)
- Who lives with them too? (his grandparents)
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Children point to the people in the picture while the teacher says "father", "mother", "brother", "sister", "grandparents"
Differentiation
- Support: Read one sentence at a time and point to the person in the picture
- Extension: Children say two sentences about Ali's family in their own words
Day 2: Activity Time (40 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 76, pencils
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Read the first lines of the passage again together.
Main Activity (25 minutes)
- Read the first instruction: "Tick each sentence that is true and cross each one that is not."
- Read each sentence and look back at the passage together:
- Ali has two brothers. (cross: Ali has one brother and one sister)
- His mother is a doctor. (cross: his mother is a housewife)
- His father is an engineer. (cross: his father is a doctor)
- Children say the true sentence for each one, for example "Ali has one brother and one sister."
- Read the second instruction: "Write the name of each person in your family."
- Children write the names of their father, mother, sister and brother on the lines
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Children read the names they wrote to a partner: "My father's name is ___."
Differentiation
- Support: Do one sentence at a time and point to the line in the passage that gives the answer
- Extension: Children write one sentence about their own family, for example "I have ___ brothers."
Teaching Tips
- All three sentences in the tick-or-cross activity are not true, so all three get a cross. Ask children to say the true sentence each time.
- Some children may not have a brother or a sister. Let them leave a line empty or write the name of a cousin or friend, and be kind about it.
- Use the picture to help children match each person with the right word
