Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 52
Comprehension
Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Skillford
Overview
In this lesson children read a short passage, "This is my school," and then choose the correct word to complete three sentences about it. They find the answer in the passage and choose between near/far, little/big and many/few.
Learning Objectives
- Read a short passage aloud
- Find answers in the passage
- Choose the correct word from two choices
- Write the word in the blank
Day 1: Reading the Passage (35 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 75
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Ask: "What is your school like? Is it near your house?" Let a few children answer.
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Read the instruction: "Read the passage aloud."
- Read the passage aloud while children follow the words with a finger (as the Teacher's Note says). Then read it a second time.
- Look at the picture. Ask what the boy is wearing and what he is doing.
- Ask simple questions from the passage:
- Is the school near the boy's house? (yes)
- Who does he walk with? (his father)
- Is the building big? (yes)
- Are the teachers kind? (yes, to everybody)
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Children read one sentence each from the passage aloud
Differentiation
- Support: Read the passage in short parts and point to the answer before saying it
- Extension: Children say two sentences about their own school, using the passage as a model
Day 2: Activity Time (35 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 75, pencils
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Read the first sentence of the passage again together.
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Read the instruction: "Choose the correct word and write it in the blank."
- Take the three sentences one at a time and let children find the answer in the passage before they choose (as the Teacher's Note says):
- My school is near my house. (choose from near / far)
- The building of my school is big. (choose from little / big)
- My school has many classrooms. (choose from many / few)
- Children write the word in each blank
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Read the finished sentences aloud together. Children say one more true sentence about the school.
Differentiation
- Support: Underline the sentence in the passage that holds each answer
- Extension: Children write one more sentence about the school in their notebooks
Teaching Tips
- Always send children back to the passage to find the answer; do not let them guess
- Read the passage twice: the first time to enjoy it, the second time to find answers
- Let children point to the sentence in the passage that matches each answer
