Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 51

Story Time: The Thirsty Crow

Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Skillford

Overview

In this lesson children enjoy reading the story of The Thirsty Crow. A thirsty crow finds a pitcher with very little water. He cannot reach the water, so he thinks of a plan and drops pebbles into the pot one by one. The water level rises and he drinks. Children read the story, look at the picture and tell what is happening in their own words.

Learning Objectives

  • Listen to and read the story of The Thirsty Crow
  • Say what happens in the story in the order it happens
  • Look at the picture and tell what is happening in their own words
  • Retell the story with a partner

Day 1: Reading the Story (35 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 74

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Ask children: "What do we do when we are thirsty?" Say that today's story is about a thirsty crow.

Main Activity (20 minutes)

  • Read the instruction: "Let us enjoy reading the story of The Thirsty Crow."
  • Read the story aloud, line by line. Children repeat each line. Let children make the crow's sound "Kaa, Kaa, Kaa..." where it comes in the story.
  • Read the story a second time with children following the words with a finger
  • Look at the picture together, as the Teacher's Note says, and let children tell you in their own words what is happening
  • Ask simple questions:
    • Who was thirsty? (the crow)
    • What did he see? (a pitcher with very little water in it)
    • Could he reach the water? (no)

Wrap-Up (10 minutes)

  • Children act out the crow flying, searching and being thirsty, then say "Kaa, Kaa, Kaa..."

Differentiation

  • Support: Read the story one line at a time and answer each question with the teacher pointing to the line
  • Extension: Children read a few lines without help

Day 2: Telling the Story Again (35 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 74, pebbles or small paper balls, a cup

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Say the first line together: "Once, a crow was very thirsty."

Main Activity (20 minutes)

  • Read the story again with the class
  • Go through the story in order and ask what happened next:
    1. The crow was very thirsty and searched for water everywhere.
    2. He saw a pitcher with very little water in it.
    3. He put his beak inside, but he could not reach the water.
    4. He thought of a plan. He picked some pebbles and dropped them into the pot one by one.
    5. The water level rose.
    6. The crow drank the water and flew away happily.
  • Show the plan: drop small pebbles one by one into a cup of water and watch the water rise

Wrap-Up (10 minutes)

  • Children retell the story to a partner using the words "first", "then" and "at last" if they can

Differentiation

  • Support: Point to the lines in the book as each part is retold
  • Extension: Children retell the whole story without looking at the page

Teaching Tips

  • Read with expression and let the crow's voice be fun
  • As the Teacher's Note says, let learners tell what is happening in the picture in their own words
  • The story uses "pitcher" and "pot" for the same thing; explain that they mean the same here
