Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 50
Capitalisation
Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Skillford
Overview
In this lesson children rewrite six sentences with capital letters where they belong. The sentences use the names of people, places and a month, and each sentence starts with a capital letter.
Learning Objectives
- Begin a sentence with a capital letter
- Use a capital letter for the name of a person
- Use a capital letter for the name of a place and a month
- Rewrite each sentence with capital letters where they belong
Day 1: Capital Letters (40 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 73, pencils, a name card for each child
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Hold up each child's name card. Ask which letter is a capital letter. Say that names always start with a capital letter.
Main Activity (25 minutes)
- Read the instruction on page 73: "Rewrite each sentence with capital letters where they belong."
- Remind children that every sentence starts with a capital letter, and so do names of people, places and months
- Read each sentence aloud and ask which words need a capital letter. Write the correct sentence on the board and let children copy it on the line:
- pakistan is a beautiful country. -- Pakistan is a beautiful country.
- my teacher's name is nadia. -- My teacher's name is Nadia.
- my aunt Sadia lives in karachi. -- My aunt Sadia lives in Karachi.
- Ayesha has a cat named luna. -- Ayesha has a cat named Luna.
- my birthday is in november. -- My birthday is in November.
- tomorrow, the children will go to the zoo. -- Tomorrow, the children will go to the zoo.
- Point out that "Sadia" and "Ayesha" already have a capital letter
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Children say a sentence about themselves ("My name is ___."). A friend says which words need a capital letter.
Differentiation
- Support: Look only for the first word of each sentence and for names, then check the sentence with the teacher
- Extension: Children write two sentences of their own about their family or school, using capital letters for names
Teaching Tips
- The page gives no rule, so say the rule aloud before children begin: a capital letter at the start of a sentence, and for names of people, places and months
- Let children underline the small letters that must change before they write
- Ask children to check their finished sentences, starting from the first word
