Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 49
Sentence Order
Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Skillford
Overview
In this lesson children learn that the words of a sentence have to be in the right order before it makes sense. They read two example sentences, "Fish swim in water." and "The tiger lives in the jungle.", and then put jumbled words in order to write three sentences.
Learning Objectives
- Understand that the words of a sentence must be in the right order
- Read the sentences "Fish swim in water." and "The tiger lives in the jungle."
- Put jumbled words in order
- Write the sentence on the line
Day 1: Putting Words in Order (40 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 72, word cards for each activity sentence, pencils
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Say a jumbled group of words, such as "water swim in fish". Ask children if it makes sense. Then say it again in order: "Fish swim in water."
Main Activity (25 minutes)
- Read the rule: "The words of a sentence have to be in the right order before it makes sense."
- Read the two examples under the pictures on page 72. Children repeat:
- Fish swim in water.
- The tiger lives in the jungle.
- Read the instruction: "Put the words in order and write the sentence on the line."
- Give three groups of children the word cards. They stand in a line to make each sentence while the class reads the words:
- woman / My / mother / kind / a / is -- My mother is a kind woman.
- innocent / Children / are -- Children are innocent.
- The / birds / chirping / are -- The birds are chirping.
- Remind children that a sentence starts with a capital letter and ends with a full stop (the word with a capital letter goes first)
- Children write each sentence on the line
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Read each finished sentence aloud together. Mix up the word cards and let a child put them back in order.
Differentiation
- Support: Do the shortest sentence first (Children are innocent.) with the word cards in front of the child
- Extension: Children make another sentence of their own with three or four words and write it on a line
Teaching Tips
- Use real word cards so children can move the words around, then write
- Look for the word with a capital letter: it is the first word of the sentence
- Read every sentence aloud to check that it makes sense
