Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 47
Opposite Words
Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Skillford
Overview
In this lesson children learn that opposite words have opposite meanings. They look at five pairs with pictures: day and night, fast and slow, full and empty, go and stop, big and small. Then they match tall and short with the other pairs by drawing lines.
Learning Objectives
- Understand that opposite words have opposite meanings
- Read the pairs day/night, fast/slow, full/empty, go/stop and big/small
- Say the opposite of a word
- Draw a line to match each picture with its opposite
Day 1: Pairs of Opposites (35 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 69, flashcards for big, small, happy, sad, up and down
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Stand up and sit down. Say "up" and "down". Ask children what we call words like these.
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Read the rule: "Opposite words are words that have opposite meanings."
- Look at each pair on page 69 and read both words together, using the pictures:
- day (sun) and night (moon)
- fast (rabbit) and slow (tortoise)
- full (full glass) and empty (empty glass)
- go (green light) and stop (red light)
- big (big fish) and small (small fish)
- Show the flashcard pairs from the Teacher's Note: big and small, happy and sad, up and down. Say both halves each time.
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Say one word on its own. Children call out its partner, for example "fast" and "slow".
Differentiation
- Support: Practise two pairs at a time, pointing to each picture as the word is said
- Extension: Children think of another pair of opposites and tell a partner
Day 2: Activity Time (35 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 70, pencils, coloured pencils
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Play "opposite actions": the teacher says "go" and children stop; the teacher says "stop" and children go.
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Read the instruction: "Look at the pictures of opposites below. Draw a line to match each picture with its opposite."
- Read the words on the left and the words on the right. Ask which picture belongs with which word.
- Match the pairs together:
- tall (giraffe) -- short (monkey)
- full -- empty
- fast -- slow
- day -- night
- go -- stop
- Children draw the lines with a pencil
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Children say each pair aloud: "tall and short", "full and empty", and so on
Differentiation
- Support: Match one pair together, then let children match the rest
- Extension: Children read all five pairs without help and use one pair in a spoken sentence
Teaching Tips
- Always say both halves of a pair, as the Teacher's Note suggests
- Use real objects and actions (tall and short children, a full and an empty cup) so children see the difference
- Give children one word on its own and ask for its partner
