Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 46
Punctuation
Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Skillford
Overview
In this lesson children learn two punctuation marks: the full stop (.) and the question mark (?). A sentence that tells you something ends in a full stop. A sentence that asks something ends in a question mark. Children read four questions and answers, then add the correct mark to five sentences.
Learning Objectives
- Know the full stop (.) and the question mark (?)
- Understand that a sentence that tells ends in a full stop
- Understand that a sentence that asks ends in a question mark
- Write the correct punctuation mark at the end of a sentence
Day 1: Full Stop and Question Mark (35 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 68, two flashcards (full stop and question mark)
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Show the two marks on flashcards. Read a sentence for each and ask children which card fits.
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Read the rules:
- "A sentence that tells you something ends in a full stop."
- "A sentence that asks something ends in a question mark."
- Read the sentences in the speech bubbles on page 68. Children repeat each pair. Let your voice rise at the end of each question and fall at the end of each answer:
- What is your name? My name is Sana Riaz.
- How old are you? I am five years old.
- In which class do you study? I study in prep.
- Where do you live? I live in Lahore.
- Ask which sentences ask and which sentences tell
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Hold up a card. Children say "question mark" or "full stop" and give a sentence that fits.
Differentiation
- Support: Practise only the first two pairs (What is your name? and How old are you?) and point to the mark each time
- Extension: Children ask a partner a question of their own and the partner answers with a telling sentence
Day 2: Activity Time (35 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 68, pencils
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Say a sentence aloud. Children draw a full stop or a question mark in the air.
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Read the instruction: "Read each sentence, then write a full stop or a question mark in the box."
- Read each sentence aloud and let children decide before anybody writes:
- My hair is black .
- What is in your bag ?
- Her eyes are brown .
- When do you wake up ?
- Hina likes fritters .
- Children write the marks in the boxes
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Children say a telling sentence and a question about themselves, and a friend names the mark each needs
Differentiation
- Support: Ask "Is this sentence telling or asking?" before choosing the mark
- Extension: Children write one question and one telling sentence of their own, with the correct marks
Teaching Tips
- Let your voice fall at the end of a statement and rise at the end of a question, as in the Teacher's Note
- Question words such as what, when, where and how begin a sentence that needs a question mark
- Show the two marks on flashcards so children can match them to the sentences
