Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 42
Use of "Where" and "When"
Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Skillford
Overview
In this lesson children learn to use "where" and "when". "Where" asks about a place. "When" asks about a time. Children read questions and answers aloud and then write their own answers to two questions.
Learning Objectives
- Understand that "where" asks about a place
- Understand that "when" asks about a time
- Read questions and answers such as "Where is the bird? The bird is in the air."
- Write their own answers to "where" and "when" questions
Day 1: Where and When (35 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 64, pencils
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Ask "Where is the door?" Children point and answer. Ask "When do we come to school?" Children answer with a time.
Main Activity (25 minutes)
- Read the rule: "'Where' asks about a place. 'When' asks about a time."
- Read the instruction: "Read each question and its answer aloud." Look at the pictures and read:
- Where are the children? The children are on the bus.
- Where is the bird? The bird is in the air.
- When does Ali go to school? Ali goes to school at 8 o'clock.
- Read the Activity instruction: "Write your own answer to each question." Look at the pictures and talk about each question first:
- Where are the frogs? (a place, for example "The frogs are in the pond.")
- When do you eat breakfast? (a time, for example "I eat breakfast in the morning.")
- Children write their own answers on the lines
- Teacher's Note activity: wh-questions start with "what", "who", "where", "when" or "why", and each one asks for a different kind of answer. Put a few around the room, such as "What is your favourite colour?" and "Where do you sit?", so the learners hear how the answer changes with the question word.
Wrap-Up (5 minutes)
- Ask a few "where" and "when" questions. Children say whether the answer will be a place or a time.
Differentiation
- Support: Practise only "Where are the children?" and "When does Ali go to school?"
- Extension: Children ask their partner a "where" question and a "when" question
Teaching Tips
- "Where" = place. "When" = time.
- Always talk about the picture before writing
- Remind children to begin an answer with a capital letter and end it with a full stop
