Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 40
Use of "Is", "Am" and "Are"
Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Skillford
Overview
In this lesson children learn to use "is", "am" and "are". We use "is" for one person, one animal or one thing. We use "are" for more than one. "Am" goes with "I" and with nothing else. Children read sentences aloud and then write "is", "are" or "am" in the blanks.
Learning Objectives
- Use "is" for one person, one animal or one thing
- Use "are" for more than one
- Use "am" with "I" only
- Write "is", "are" or "am" in the blanks
Day 1: Is, Am and Are (35 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 62, pencils, three cards: "is", "am", "are"
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Teacher's Note: give one example of each. Say "Ali is here", "The boys are here" and "I am here". Children read all three back to you.
Main Activity (25 minutes)
- Read the rule: "Use 'is' for one person, one animal or one thing. Use 'are' for more than one. 'Am' goes with 'I' and with nothing else."
- Read the instruction: "Read each sentence aloud." Children repeat the four sentences on page 62:
- He is my brother.
- It is an eagle.
- They are friends.
- I am a student.
- Read the Activity instruction: "Write 'is', 'are' or 'am' in each blank." Read each sentence and stop at the blank so a child supplies the missing word:
- Aden is a happy child.
- The flowers are fresh.
- I am five years old.
- The boys are playing hockey.
- The dog is big.
- Ducks are gentle.
Wrap-Up (5 minutes)
- Hold up the cards "is", "am" or "are". Children say a sentence using that word.
Differentiation
- Support: Practise only "He is my brother", "They are friends" and "I am a student"
- Extension: Children make their own sentences with "is", "am" and "are"
Teaching Tips
- Ask first: is it one or more than one?
- "I" always goes with "am"
- Say the sentence aloud and listen for the word that sounds right
