Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 39

Use of "They/Their" and "We/Our"

Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Skillford

Overview

In this lesson children learn to use "they", "their", "we" and "our". We use "they" for a group of people or things, and "their" shows that something belongs to that group. We use "we" when we are one of the group ourselves, and "our" shows that something belongs to the group we are in. Children read picture sentences and then write the missing words.

Learning Objectives

  • Use "they" and "their" for a group of people or things
  • Use "we" and "our" when we are one of the group
  • Read sentences such as "They are boys. These are their books."
  • Write "They/their" and "We/our" in the blanks

Day 1: They, Their, We and Our (35 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 61, pencils

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Ask a group of three children to stand up. The class says "They are standing." The group says "We are standing." Repeat with another group.

Main Activity (25 minutes)

  • Read the rule: "Use 'They' for a group of people or things. 'Their' shows that something belongs to that group. Use 'We' when you are one of the group yourself. 'Our' shows that something belongs to the group you are in."
  • Look at the two pictures on page 61 and read the sentences:
    • They are boys. These are their books.
    • We are brother and sister. These are our bicycles.
  • Show the difference: the class looks at the boys from outside, so we say "they". The brother and sister are talking about themselves, so they say "we".
  • Read the Activity instruction: "Write 'They' and 'their', or 'We' and 'our', in the blanks." Complete together:
    • They are players. These are their footballs.
    • They are playing badminton. These are their rackets.
  • Extension talk: if the badminton players were speaking about themselves, they would say "We are playing badminton. These are our rackets."
  • Teacher's Note activity: explain that "they" refers to a group of people, while "their" shows ownership. "We" refers to a group that includes the speaker, while "our" shows ownership by that group. Ask children to give one example of each using their own class.

Wrap-Up (5 minutes)

  • Ask children to say "We are in Prep. These are our books." Then point to another group and say "They are in Prep. These are their books."

Differentiation

  • Support: Practise only "They are boys. These are their books."
  • Extension: Children make a "They" sentence and a "We" sentence about their own class

Teaching Tips

  • "They" and "their" are about other people. "We" and "our" include the speaker.
  • Use real groups in the classroom to practise
  • "These are" goes with more than one thing, such as books and bicycles
