Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 37

Use of "I" and "My"

Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Skillford

Overview

In this lesson children learn to use "I" and "my". We use "I" and "my" when we are talking about ourselves, like "I am Ayesha." and "This is my bag." Children read the speech bubbles on the page and then fill in blanks with "I" or "my".

Learning Objectives

  • Use "I" and "my" when talking about ourselves
  • Read sentences such as "I am Ayesha." and "This is my bag."
  • Answer "Who are you?" with "I am ..."
  • Fill in blanks with "I" and "my"

Day 1: I and My (35 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 58, pencils, a book or bag for each child

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Point to yourself and say "I am [teacher's name]." Hold up your bag and say "This is my bag." Children copy the actions with their own bag.

Main Activity (25 minutes)

  • Read the rule: "Use 'I' and 'My' when you are talking about yourself."
  • Look at the picture on page 58 and read the speech bubbles:
    • Who are you?
    • I am Ayesha.
    • Whose bag is this?
    • This is my bag.
  • Show that "I" tells who we are and "my" tells what belongs to us
  • Read the Activity instruction: "Fill in the blanks with 'I' or 'my'." Look at the picture of the rabbit and complete together:
    • Who are you? I am a rabbit.
    • What is your name? My name is Bunny.
  • Teacher's Note activity: ask each child two questions, "Who are you?" and "What have you got that belongs to you?" The first answer starts with "I": "I am [name]." The second needs "my": "This is my book." Keep going until everybody has said both.

Wrap-Up (5 minutes)

  • Hold up a card with "I" or "my". Children say a sentence that uses that word.

Differentiation

  • Support: Practise only "I am [name]." and "This is my bag."
  • Extension: Children say three sentences about themselves using "I" and "my"

Teaching Tips

  • Point to yourself every time you say "I" or "my"
  • "I" is always a capital letter
  • "I" goes with "am": I am Ayesha. I am a rabbit.
  • "My" is followed by a thing: my bag, my name, my book
