Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 36

Use of "It" and "Its"

Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Skillford

Overview

In this lesson children learn to use "it" and "its". We use "it" for one animal or one thing, like "It is a parrot." We use "its" to show that something belongs to that animal or thing, like "Its colour is green." Children read short sentences about pictures and then complete sentences with "it" or "its".

Learning Objectives

  • Use "it" for one animal or one thing
  • Use "its" to show that something belongs to that animal or thing
  • Read sentences such as "It is a parrot. Its colour is green."
  • Complete sentences with "it" or "its"

Day 1: It and Its (35 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 57, a few coloured classroom objects (for example a ball), pencils

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Hold up an object and say "It is a ball." Then say "Its colour is red." Children repeat.

Main Activity (25 minutes)

  • Read the rules:
    • "Use 'It' for one animal or one thing."
    • "Use 'Its' to show that something belongs to that animal or thing."
  • Read the sentences on page 57. Children repeat:
    • It is a parrot. Its colour is green.
    • It is a banana. Its colour is yellow.
    • It is a flower. Its colour is pink.
    • It is a crow. Its colour is black.
    • It is a dog. Its colour is brown.
    • It is a door. Its colour is blue.
  • Read the Activity instruction: "Complete each sentence with 'it' or 'its'." Complete the sentences together:
    1. It is a balloon.
    2. Its colour is purple.
    3. It is a mango.
    4. Its colour is yellow.
  • Teacher's Note activity: hold up an object and let children describe it, starting with "It" ("It is a ball."). Then ask about a part of it so they need "Its" ("Its colour is red."). Go round the room until everyone has said both.

Wrap-Up (5 minutes)

  • Say the first sentence about a picture and let children finish with "Its colour is ..."

Differentiation

  • Support: Practise only "It is a parrot. Its colour is green."
  • Extension: Children describe an object in the classroom with one "It" sentence and one "Its" sentence

Teaching Tips

  • "It" names the thing. "Its" talks about something that belongs to the thing.
  • Point to the picture for "It" and to the colour for "Its"
  • Notice that "its" has no apostrophe when it shows belonging
