Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 35

Use of "These" and "Those"

Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Skillford

Overview

In this lesson children learn to use "these" and "those". We use "these" to refer to more than one thing that is near the speaker. We use "those" to refer to more than one thing that is far away from the speaker. Children read short sentences about pictures and then complete sentences with "these" or "those".

Learning Objectives

  • Use "these" for more than one thing near the speaker
  • Use "those" for more than one thing far away from the speaker
  • Read sentences such as "These are crayons." and "Those are parrots."
  • Complete sentences with "these" or "those"

Day 1: These and Those (35 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 55, two cards: "These" and "Those", groups of classroom objects (pencils, books)

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Hold two pencils close and say "These are pencils." Point to two books far away and say "Those are books." Children copy the actions.

Main Activity (20 minutes)

  • Read the rules:
    • "We use 'these' to refer to more than one thing that is near the speaker."
    • "We use 'those' to refer to more than one thing that is far away from the speaker."
  • Show the pictures on page 55. The first picture in each pair is close to the pointing hand, and the second is far away. Read the sentences and children repeat:
    • These are crayons. / Those are parrots.
    • These are quails. / Those are apples.
    • These are ice creams. / Those are giraffes.
    • These are toys. / Those are huts.
  • Teacher's Note activity: demonstrate "these" and "those" by pointing to objects near and far. Children take turns pointing and saying the sentence.

Wrap-Up (10 minutes)

  • Hold up the "These" card for near and the "Those" card for far. Children say a sentence for each group.

Differentiation

  • Support: Practise only "These are crayons" and "Those are parrots"
  • Extension: Children say a near sentence and a far sentence to a partner using words from the book

Day 2: Activity Time (35 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 56, pencils

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Point game: point to a group near and say "These", point to a group far and say "Those". Children repeat.

Main Activity (20 minutes)

  • Read the instruction: "Complete with 'these' or 'those'."
  • Explain: look at the pictures. If the group is close to the pointing hand, write "these". If it is far away at the end of the long line, write "those".
  • Complete the sentences together:
    1. These are tigers.
    2. Those are turtles.
    3. These are kites.

Teaching Tips

  • Always point as you speak: close for "these", far for "those"
  • "These" and "those" are used for more than one thing
  • Remind children of Lesson 34: "this" and "that" are for one thing
