Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 34
Use of "This" and "That"
Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Skillford
Overview
In this lesson children learn to use "this" and "that". We use "this" to refer to something that is near the speaker. We use "that" to refer to something that is far away from the speaker. Children read short sentences about pictures and then complete sentences with "this" or "that".
Learning Objectives
- Use "this" for something near the speaker
- Use "that" for something far away from the speaker
- Read sentences such as "This is a cat." and "That is a duck."
- Complete sentences with "this" or "that"
Day 1: This and That (35 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 53, two cards: "This" and "That", a few classroom objects
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Pick up a pencil and say "This is a pencil." Point to the door and say "That is a door." Children copy the actions.
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Read the rules:
- "We use 'this' to refer to something that is near the speaker."
- "We use 'that' to refer to something that is far away from the speaker."
- Show the pictures on page 53. The first picture in each pair is close to the pointing hand, and the second is far away. Read the sentences and children repeat:
- This is a cat. / That is a duck.
- This is an egg. / That is a truck.
- This is an ant. / That is a tree.
- This is a camel. / That is an eagle.
- Teacher's Note activity: point at something on the desk and say "This is a ...". Then point out of the window and say "That is a ...". Go round the room and let each child choose an object and say the sentence that matches where it is.
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Hold up the "This" card for near and the "That" card for far. Children say a sentence for each.
Differentiation
- Support: Practise only "This is a cat" and "That is a duck"
- Extension: Children say a near sentence and a far sentence to a partner using words from the book
Day 2: Activity Time (35 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 54, pencils
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Point game: point near and say "This", point far and say "That". Children repeat.
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Read the instruction: "Complete with 'this' or 'that'."
- Explain: look at the picture. If it is close to the pointing hand, write "this". If it is far away at the end of the long line, write "that".
- Complete the sentences together:
- This is a whale.
- That is an elephant.
- This is a capsicum.
- That is an onion.
- This is a falcon.
- That is an ox.
- This is a bat.
- That is an umpire.
- This is a soldier.
- That is an axe.
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Children read all ten sentences aloud, taking turns, and point near or far as they read
Differentiation
- Support: Cover the far pictures first and do only the near sentences
- Extension: Children say which sentences are "near" and which are "far" without help
Teaching Tips
- Always point as you speak: close for "this", far for "that"
- "This" is near. "That" is far.
- Use "a" before most words and "an" before words that start with a vowel sound, such as "an egg" and "an ant"
