By the end of this lesson, children should be able to:

1. Use "This" for something near the speaker
2. Use "That" for something far away from the speaker
3. Read sentences such as "This is a cat" and "That is a duck"
4. Complete sentences with "this" or "that"

Formative Assessment

1. Point and Say (During Day 1)

• Task: Children point at something near them and say "This is a ...", then point at something far away and say "That is a ..."
• Criteria:
  • Chooses "this" for near and "that" for far
  • Says the whole sentence clearly
• Rating: Excellent / Good / Needs Practice

2. Near or Far (During Day 1)

• Task: Teacher holds up a picture card close, then far away. Children say "This" or "That".
• Criteria: Correct word each time
• Rating: All correct / Most correct / Needs support

3. Activity Time (During Day 2)

• Task: Children complete the ten sentences on page 54
• Criteria: Correct word in at least 7 out of 10 blanks
• Rating: Excellent / Good / Needs Practice

Remediation Plan

• Children who score below 5/10 should:
  • Play the near and far game every day, pointing at things in the classroom
  • Read the sentences on page 53 with the teacher, pointing to each picture
  • Complete the page 54 sentences again in small groups, saying whether each picture is near or far
