Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 33
Position Words
Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Skillford
Overview
In this lesson children learn about position words. Position words tell you where a thing is. Children read three sentences about a rabbit (under the table, in the bucket, on the table) and then write "in", "on" or "under" to say where a rat is.
Learning Objectives
- Say that position words tell you where a thing is
- Read "The rabbit is under the table", "The rabbit is in the bucket" and "The rabbit is on the table"
- Use "in", "on" and "under" correctly
- Write the right position word in a sentence
Day 1: Where Is It? (35 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 52, a small toy, a chair, a box, a table
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Hide a small toy somewhere in the room. Ask "Where is it?" and let children point.
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Read the rule: "Position words tell you where a thing is."
- Read the instruction: "Let us read the three sentences below and look carefully at the picture to see what the rabbit is doing."
- Read the three sentences on page 52. Children repeat and point to the picture:
- The rabbit is under the table.
- The rabbit is in the bucket.
- The rabbit is on the table.
- Teacher's Note: put a toy on a chair, then in a box, then under the table, saying the whole sentence out loud each time. Now give the instruction and let children move the toy themselves. Ask them to say where it has ended up before you set the next one.
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Children take turns putting the toy in, on or under something and saying the sentence
Differentiation
- Support: Practise only "in" and "on" first, then add "under"
- Extension: Children say two position sentences about objects in the classroom
Day 2: Activity Time (35 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 52, pencils
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Teacher says "in", "on" or "under". Children move a pencil to match (in the pencil case, on the desk, under the desk).
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Read the instruction: "Look at each picture, then write 'in', 'on' or 'under' in the blanks."
- Look at each picture, say where the rat is, and complete the sentences together:
- The rat is in the bed.
- The rat is under the umbrella.
- The rat is in the hole.
- Read each finished sentence aloud
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Children act out the three sentences with a toy and say them to a partner
Differentiation
- Support: Say the three position words aloud and let children point to the picture before writing
- Extension: Children change a sentence to use a different position word (for example "The rabbit is on the bucket")
Teaching Tips
- Always say the whole sentence aloud when you move the toy
- Let children move the toy themselves so they feel the meaning
- Ask "Where is it?" for every picture
