Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 32
Describing Words
Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Skillford
Overview
In this lesson children learn about describing words. A describing word tells you how something looks, tastes, smells or feels. Children read three examples (a small bird, a tall tower, a big elephant), then choose describing words from a bank to complete four phrases.
Learning Objectives
- Say what a describing word is
- Read "a small bird", "a tall tower" and "a big elephant"
- Find the describing word in a phrase
- Choose a describing word from the bank for each picture
Day 1: How Does It Look? (35 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 51, a few classroom objects of different sizes and colours
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Hold up a big book and a small book. Ask "How is this book different?" Children say "big" and "small".
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Read the rule: "A describing word tells you how something looks, tastes, smells or feels."
- Read the three examples on page 51. Children repeat and point to the picture:
- a small bird
- a tall tower
- a big elephant
- Ask: "Which word tells us about the bird?" (small) "Which word tells us about the tower?" (tall) "Which word tells us about the elephant?" (big)
- Teacher's Note: send children around the room to find one object each and describe it out loud, using at least one describing word. Write the best of them on the board and read the whole list back together.
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Children take turns saying a describing word for an object in the room
Differentiation
- Support: Practise only big and small with two objects
- Extension: Children use two describing words for one object
Day 2: Activity Time (35 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 51, pencils
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Read the four words in the bank together: small, green, sad, juicy
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Read the instruction: "Look and write the correct describing word for each picture."
- Look at each picture, say what it shows, then choose the word from the bank and write it:
- a sad boy
- a small ant
- a green tree
- a juicy orange
- Read each finished phrase aloud
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Children say a new phrase for each picture using a different describing word
Differentiation
- Support: Say what the picture looks like first (for example "the tree is green"), then find the word in the bank
- Extension: Children use each describing word in a longer sentence
Teaching Tips
- Ask "How does it look? How does it taste? How does it feel?"
- Hold up real objects so children can see, touch and smell
- A describing word usually comes before the naming word
