Action Words
Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Skillford
Overview
In this lesson children learn about action words. An action word, or verb, is a word for something being done. Children read nine action words with pictures, act them out, and then write the right action word under each of nine new pictures.
Learning Objectives
- Say what an action word (verb) is
- Read the action words walking, playing, jumping, reading, listening, brushing, writing, knitting and drinking
- Act out an action word
- Write the action word for each picture
Day 1: Look and Act (35 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 49, action word cards for the nine words
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Stand up and jump. Ask "What am I doing?" Children say "jumping".
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Read the instruction: "Look at each picture and read its action word."
- Read the nine action words on page 49. Children repeat and point to the picture:
- walking, playing, jumping
- reading, listening, brushing
- writing, knitting, drinking
- Explain: "An action word, or verb, is a word for something being done."
- Teacher's Note: hold up a card, read the word and act it out. Let children copy the action straight back.
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Teacher holds up a card. Children act it out and say the word.
Differentiation
- Support: Practise only walking, jumping and drinking first
- Extension: Children say what each person in the pictures is doing, in a whole sentence
Day 2: Activity Time (35 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 50, pencils
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Read the word bank together: flying, painting, drinking, brushing, reading, listening, drawing, playing, jumping
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Read the instruction: "Write the action word for each picture."
- Look at each picture, say what is happening, then choose the word from the bank and write it:
- drawing
- jumping
- drinking
- painting
- brushing
- playing
- flying
- reading
- listening
- Cross out each word in the bank when it is used
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Children act out each word on the page and a partner guesses it
Differentiation
- Support: Read the word bank aloud and say the picture name together before writing
- Extension: Children read all nine words aloud without help
Teaching Tips
- Always act the word out as well as saying it
- Ask "What is he doing?" or "What is she doing?" for every picture
- Action words on this page all end in "ing"
