Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 28
Naming Words
Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Skillford
Overview
In this lesson children learn about naming words. A naming word, or noun, is the name of a person, animal, place or thing. Children look at four examples (Ali, Lion, Fan and Lahore), then name pictures and write the right word from the word bank.
Learning Objectives
- Say what a naming word (noun) is
- Sort naming words into person, animal, place and thing
- Say the name of each picture
- Choose a naming word from the word bank and write it
Day 1: Person, Animal, Place, Thing (35 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 44, board, four column headings: Person, Animal, Place, Thing
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Ask a few questions and let each child answer: "What is your name?" "Are you a boy or a girl?" "Where do you live?" "Which places do you like to visit?" "What is your favourite animal?"
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Read the rule: "A naming word, or noun, is the name of a person, animal, place or thing."
- Look at the four boxes on page 44. Children repeat each word and say what kind of word it is:
- Person: Ali
- Animal: Lion
- Thing: Fan
- Place: Lahore
- Write the answers from the warm-up on the board in four columns: person, animal, place, thing. Name each column, then ask children to add one more of their own to each.
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Teacher says a word. Children say "person", "animal", "place" or "thing".
Differentiation
- Support: Practise only "person" and "animal" first, then add place and thing
- Extension: Children say one new naming word for each of the four columns
Day 2: Activity Time (35 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 44, pencils
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Read the four words in the word bank together: Camel, Lahore, Apple, Raza
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Read the instruction: "Say the name of each picture, choose it from the word bank, and write it in the space provided."
- Say the name of each picture, find it in the word bank, and write it on the lines:
- The boy: Raza
- The building: Lahore
- The animal: Camel
- The fruit: Apple
- Point out that the names Raza and Lahore begin with a capital letter
- Ask: is each word a person, an animal, a place or a thing?
- Raza (person), Lahore (place), Camel (animal), Apple (thing)
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Children read the four words aloud and say what kind of naming word each one is
Differentiation
- Support: Say the picture name together first, then find the word in the bank
- Extension: Children write one more naming word for each of the four kinds
Teaching Tips
- Name each column on the board before children add words
- Use the question "Is it a person, an animal, a place or a thing?" every time
