Video Script -- Lesson 27

Use of "a" and "an"

Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Skillford

Hello children! Welcome to today's lesson. Today we are going to learn how to use "a" and "an".

We use "a" before words that begin with a consonant sound. We use "an" before words that begin with a vowel sound. Let us look at some examples.

A zebra. A pen. A hat. A parrot. A truck. Each of these words begins with a consonant sound, so we say "a". Say them with me.

An apple. An elephant. An igloo. An onion. An umbrella. Each of these words begins with a vowel sound, so we say "an". Very good!

Here is the secret. We listen to the sound the word starts with, not only the letter. Listen to the first sound of each word, and then choose "a" or "an".

Now it is time for the activity. Look at each picture and write "a" or "an" in the box in front of the word. An apple. A bat. A cat. An orange. A doll. An umbrella. A balloon. An ostrich. Say each phrase aloud before you write.

Let us keep going. A tree. An igloo. A rabbit. An iron. An owl. A pen. A chair. A boat. A bed. An eagle. A boy. A car. Well done!

Let us quickly go over what we learned today. We use "a" before a consonant sound, and we use "an" before a vowel sound.

Great job, everyone! Look around your classroom and say "a" or "an" before the things you see. See you next time!
