Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 25
Two Vowels Together Rule
Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Skillford
Overview
In this lesson children learn the Two Vowels Together Rule. When two vowels sit side by side, the first one says its own name and the second one says nothing. Children read rows of words with ai, ee, ie, oa and ue, then write the missing pair of vowels in each word.
Learning Objectives
- Say the rule: the first vowel says its own name and the second says nothing
- Read words with ai, ee, ie, oa and ue
- Hear the first vowel in each word
- Write the missing pair of vowels in a word
Day 1: Two Vowels, One Sound (35 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 40, five cards: ai, ee, ie, oa, ue
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Hold up each card and ask children to say the first vowel name only (a, e, i, o, u)
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Read the rule: "When two vowels sit side by side, the first one says its own name and the second one says nothing."
- Read the instruction: "Read each row aloud and listen to the first vowel."
- Read the five rows on page 40. Children repeat each word and point to the two vowels:
- ai: rain, mail, fail, sail, tail
- ee: jeep, sheep, deep, feed, need
- ie: tie, pie, lie, die, movie
- oa: coat, soap, boat, toad, goat
- ue: blue, glue, true, clue, hue
- Teacher's Note: read the five rows aloud together, then ask which of the two vowels they can hear and which one has gone quiet. Let children read the rows again on their own before anyone starts writing.
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Teacher says a word from the page. Children hold up the card with the two vowels (for example boat, oa).
Differentiation
- Support: Read one row at a time and say the first vowel name before the word
- Extension: Children say which vowel is quiet in each word
Day 2: Activity Time (35 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 40, pencils
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Read the first row again: rain, mail, fail, sail, tail
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Read the instruction: "Write the missing pair of vowels in each word. The first one is done for you."
- Look at the first one together: boat
- Say each word slowly and listen for the first vowel, then write the missing pair:
- rain
- fail
- deep
- toad
- need
- blue
- sheep
- green
- train
- Two words have more than one possible answer. For fl__ the vowel pair can be ee (flee) or ue (flue). For r__l it can be ai (rail) or ee (reel). Accept either and read the word aloud.
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Children read their finished words to a partner
Differentiation
- Support: Give the choice of two pairs for each word (for example ai or ee for rain)
- Extension: Children think of one more word that has oa or ee
Teaching Tips
- Say "the first vowel says its name, the second is quiet" for every word
- Read the rows aloud together before children write anything
- Cover the second vowel with a finger and read the word again
