Video Script -- Lesson 24
Different Spellings of Long Vowel Sounds
Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Skillford
Hello children! Welcome to today's lesson. Today we are going to learn about different spellings of long vowel sounds.
A long vowel says its own name. Listen. A, e, i, o, u. Today we will see that the same long vowel sound can be written in more than one way. Let us read some words and listen for the long vowel.
Rain and snail. Day and tray. Both pairs have the long "a" sound. In rain and snail we write "a i". In day and tray we write "a y". Same sound, different spellings!
Lady and jelly. Money and honey. Here we hear the long "e" sound. We can write it with "y", or with "e y".
Sky and fly. Right and fight. Now we hear the long "i". We can write it with "y", or with "i g h".
Noon and pool. Toe and foe. Dew and new. Juice and fruit. Say each word slowly with me and listen to the vowel.
Did you notice something? Every box on the page spells the same sound in two different ways. When we hear a long vowel, we ask ourselves which letters are making it.
Now let us do the activity. Choose a spelling from the bank and write it in each word. Snail. Day. Money. Light. Moon. Toe. Juice. Few. Say each word slowly, listen for the long vowel, and then choose the spelling.
Let us quickly go over what we learned today. One long vowel sound can be written in more than one way. We sound the word out slowly and ask which letters are making the sound.
Great job, everyone! Look for these spellings in the words around you. See you next time!
