Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 24
Different Spellings of Long Vowel Sounds
Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Skillford
Overview
In this lesson children see that one long vowel sound can be spelled in more than one way. They read word pairs from the page, listen for the long vowel, and then choose a spelling from the bank to complete each word.
Learning Objectives
- Read pairs of words and listen for the long vowel
- Know that one sound can have two different spellings
- Read the spellings ai, ay, y, ey, igh, oo, oe, ui and ew in words
- Choose a spelling from the bank to complete a word
Day 1: Same Sound, Different Spellings (35 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 39, a chart with the five sound boxes (a, e, i, o, u)
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Say the five vowel names together: a, e, i, o, u
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Read the instruction: "Read each pair of words aloud and listen for the long vowel."
- Read the words in each box on page 39. Children repeat and point to the letters that make the sound:
- a as in ai: rain, snail / ay: day, tray
- e as in y: lady, jelly / ey: money, honey
- i as in y: sky, fly / igh: right, fight
- o as in oo: noon, pool / oe: toe, foe
- u as in ui: juice, fruit / ew: dew, new
- Teacher's Note: sound each word out slowly and ask which long vowel they can hear. Then ask which letters are making it. Every box spells the same sound in two different ways.
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Teacher says a word from the page (for example tray). Children say which letters make the sound (ay).
Differentiation
- Support: Work on one sound box at a time (for example only a as in ai and ay)
- Extension: Children read all the words in a box and say how the two spellings are different
Day 2: Activity Time (35 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 39, pencils
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Read the spelling bank together: ui, igh, oo, ey, ai, ay, oe, ew
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Read the instruction: "Choose a spelling from the bank and write it in each word."
- Say each word slowly, listen for the long vowel, then choose the spelling. Complete the words together:
- snail
- day
- money
- light
- moon
- toe
- juice
- few
- Each spelling in the bank is used once. Cross it out when it is used.
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Children read each finished word aloud to a partner
Differentiation
- Support: Say the word slowly and let children point to the matching spelling in the bank before writing
- Extension: Children think of one more word that uses the same spelling as a word on the page
Teaching Tips
- Always say the word slowly before choosing the spelling
- Ask "which letters make the sound?" for every word
- Remind children that one sound can be written in more than one way
