Magic "e" Rule

Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Skillford

Hello children! Welcome to today's lesson. Today we are going to learn the Magic "e" Rule.

Here is the rule. When one consonant sits between a vowel and a final "e", the vowel says its own name and the "e" says nothing at all. The "e" is silent. It is there to change the vowel, but it does not make a sound.

Let us listen to the vowel change. Pin. Add an "e". Pine. Did you hear that? In pine, the "i" says its own name.

Cak, add an "e", cake. Bit, add an "e", bite. Hat, add an "e", hate. Mak, add an "e", make. Not, add an "e", note. Tub, add an "e", tube. Mat, add an "e", mate. Very good! Say each pair with me and listen to the vowel.

Now it is time for the activity. Look at the pictures and say the name of each one. Then write the missing vowel and the silent "e".

A cake. A pie. A skate. A stove. Some shoes. A plane. A kite. A lime. Say each word slowly and listen for the vowel.

Let us quickly go over what we learned today. When one consonant sits between a vowel and a final "e", the vowel says its own name. The "e" says nothing at all. Pin becomes pine, and hat becomes hate.

Great job, everyone! Read pairs of words with your friends and listen to what the "e" does. See you next time!
