Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 22

Double Consonants

Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Skillford

Overview

In this lesson children learn that when the same consonant is written twice, we say it once, and the vowel in front of it keeps its short sound. They read twelve words with double consonants and then fill in the missing double consonants (tt, pp, dd) in six picture words.

Learning Objectives

  • Know that a double consonant is the same consonant written twice
  • Know that we say a double consonant once
  • Know that the vowel in front of it keeps its short sound
  • Read twelve words with double consonants
  • Fill in the missing double consonants: tt, pp, dd

Day 1: Double Consonants (40 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 37, twelve word cards, three cards: "tt", "pp", "dd", pencils

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Write "dd" on the board. Say "d" once. Children copy and notice that two letters make one sound.

Main Activity (25 minutes)

  • Read the rule: "When the same consonant is written twice, you say it once, and the vowel in front of it keeps its short sound."
  • Read the instruction: "Read each word aloud and find the double consonant."
  • Read the twelve words. Children repeat each word and point to the double consonant:
    • cliff, well, summer
    • cobbler, coffee, egg
    • dinner, sniff, grill
    • small, dress, mess
  • Read the Activity instruction: "Fill in the missing double consonants."
  • Read the three double consonants in the boxes: tt, pp, dd.
  • Look at each picture, say the word, and write the double consonant in the two blanks:
    1. puppy: pu(pp)y
    2. puddle: pu(dd)le
    3. cattle: ca(tt)le
    4. puppet: pu(pp)et
    5. platter: pla(tt)er
    6. saddle: sa(dd)le

Wrap-Up (10 minutes)

  • Follow the Teacher's Note: make flashcards for the twelve words. Hold each one up and let learners read it. Then ask which two letters are doubled. Say the word again and show them that the doubling is heard once, never twice.

Differentiation

  • Support: Practise only the six activity words with the pictures
  • Extension: Children find a double consonant in the name of an object in the classroom

Teaching Tips

  • Say the double consonant once, never twice
  • The vowel in front of a double consonant keeps its short sound
  • Ask: "Which two letters are doubled?" after reading each word
