Words Ending with "dge" and "tch"

Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Skillford

Hello children! Welcome to today's lesson. Today we are going to learn about words that end with "dge" and "tch".

Let us listen to the last sound of a word. Some words end with the sound "j". Some words end with the sound "ch". Say them with me. J. Ch. Very good!

The ending "dge" says "j". Let us read the "dge" words. Edge. Judge. Badge. Fudge. Listen to the last sound in each word. Well done!

The ending "tch" says "ch". Let us read the "tch" words. Match. Patch. Catch. Watch. Can you hear the last sound? Yes, you can!

Here is something important. Both endings come straight after a short vowel. Say the short vowel clearly, and then stop hard on the ending.

Remember, "j" is spelt "dge", as in "bridge" and "badge". And "ch" is spelt "tch", as in "catch" and "watch".

Now it is time for our activity. We write "dge" or "tch" to finish each word, and then we read them all aloud. Ma, match. Bri, bridge. Ba, badge. Pa, patch. Ju, judge. E, edge. Ca, catch. Wa, watch. Fri, fridge. Fe, fetch. He, hedge. Wi, witch. Ske, sketch. We, wedge. Di, ditch. Lo, lodge. Pi, pitch. Do, dodge.

Let us quickly go over what we learned today. The ending "dge" says "j". The ending "tch" says "ch". Both come straight after a short vowel.

Great job, everyone! Listen for the last sound of the words you hear. See you next time!
