Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 21
Words Ending with "dge" and "tch"
Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Skillford
Overview
In this lesson children learn two word endings: "dge", which says /j/, and "tch", which says /ch/. Both endings come straight after a short vowel. Children read eight words, then write "dge" or "tch" to finish eighteen words and read them all aloud.
Learning Objectives
- Read the "dge" words: edge, judge, badge, fudge
- Read the "tch" words: match, patch, catch, watch
- Know that "dge" says /j/ and "tch" says /ch/
- Know that both endings come straight after a short vowel
- Write "dge" or "tch" to finish a word
Day 1: The Endings "dge" and "tch" (40 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 36, two cards: "dge" and "tch", pencils
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Say /j/ and /ch/ slowly. Children copy both sounds and feel the difference in their mouths.
Main Activity (25 minutes)
- Read the instruction: "Read each word aloud and listen to its ending."
- Read the "_dge" words: edge, judge, badge, fudge. Children repeat each word.
- Read the "_tch" words: match, patch, catch, watch. Children repeat each word.
- Follow the Teacher's Note: read the words aloud and stop hard on the ending each time. "dge" says /j/, as in "bridge" and "badge". "tch" says /ch/, as in "catch" and "watch". Both endings come straight after a short vowel. Listen to the last sound: /j/ is spelt "dge" and /ch/ is spelt "tch".
- Read the Activity instruction: "Write 'dge' or 'tch' to finish each word, then read them all aloud."
- Look at the eighteen word starts and write the ending together:
- dge: bri(dge), ba(dge), ju(dge), e(dge), fri(dge), lo(dge), he(dge), we(dge), do(dge)
- tch: ma(tch), pa(tch), ca(tch), fe(tch), ske(tch), di(tch), wa(tch), wi(tch), pi(tch)
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Read all eighteen words aloud together. Hold up the "dge" card for /j/ and the "tch" card for /ch/.
Differentiation
- Support: Practise only the eight words at the top of the page, then three of the activity words
- Extension: Children use one "dge" word and one "tch" word in a spoken sentence
Teaching Tips
- Stop hard on the ending when you say each word
- Listen to the last sound: /j/ is "dge" and /ch/ is "tch"
- Both endings follow a short vowel, so say the vowel clearly first
