Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 19
Vowel Digraphs
Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Skillford
Overview
In this lesson children learn that a vowel digraph is two vowels that come together to make one sound. They read eight words with their vowel digraphs and then say each picture word and circle the two letters that make the vowel sound.
Learning Objectives
- Know that a vowel digraph is two vowels that come together to make one sound
- Read the vowel digraph words: train (ai), sieve (ie, short), boat (oa), toy (oy)
- Read the vowel digraph words: queen (ee), house (ou), wood (oo, short), moon (oo, long)
- Circle the two letters that make the vowel sound in a word
Day 1: Vowel Digraphs (40 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 34, eight cards: "ai", "ie", "oa", "oy", "ee", "ou", "oo" (short), "oo" (long), pencils
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Say "train" and "boat" slowly. Ask children to listen for the vowel sound in the middle of each word.
Main Activity (25 minutes)
- Read the rule: "A vowel digraph is two vowels that come together to make one sound."
- Read each digraph with its picture word. Children repeat each word:
- ai - train
- ie (short) - sieve
- oa - boat
- oy - toy
- ee - queen
- ou - house
- oo (short) - wood
- oo (long) - moon
- Show the two "oo" sounds side by side: "wood" (short) and "moon" (long).
- Read the Activity instruction: "Say each word and circle the two letters that make the vowel sound."
- Look at each picture, say the word, and circle the two letters:
- deer: d(ee)r
- book: b(oo)k
- rain: r(ai)n
- coat: c(oa)t
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Follow the Teacher's Note: tell learners that some vowels are best friends. Two of them team up to make one sound. Show how to look at the letters, make the mouth shape, and say the sound aloud as a class.
- Hold up a digraph card. Children say its picture word.
Differentiation
- Support: Practise only "ai", "oa", "ee" and "oo" with the pictures
- Extension: Children say another word that has the same vowel digraph
Teaching Tips
- Two vowels, one sound
- Make the mouth shape for each sound and say it aloud as a class
- Show the short "oo" and the long "oo" side by side so children can hear the difference
