Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 17
Short /oo/ and Long /oo/ Sounds
Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Skillford
Overview
In this lesson children learn that two o's side by side can say either of two sounds: the short /oo/ sound, as in "book", and the long /oo/ sound, as in "moon". They read two lists of words and listen for the difference. Then they use words from a box to complete five sentences.
Learning Objectives
- Know that "oo" can say two different sounds
- Read the short /oo/ words: book, cook, look, took, wool
- Read the long /oo/ words: boot, cool, spoon, moon, pool
- Hear the difference between the short and long /oo/ sounds
- Complete sentences with words from a box
Day 1: Short and Long /oo/ (40 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 32, two cards: "short oo" and "long oo", pencils
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Say "book" and "moon" slowly. Ask: "Do they sound the same?" Children listen for the difference.
Main Activity (25 minutes)
- Read the sentence: "Two o's side by side can say either of two sounds."
- Read the instruction: "Read each list aloud and listen for the difference."
- Read the Short /oo/ list: book, cook, look, took, wool. Children repeat each word.
- Read the Long /oo/ list: boot, cool, spoon, moon, pool. Children repeat each word.
- Follow the Teacher's Note: make sure learners can hear the difference between "book" and "moon". The right sound comes with practice. Two things help them guess: long /oo/ words are the commoner of the two, and most short /oo/ words end in "k".
- Read the Activity instruction: "Use the words in the box to complete the sentences."
- Read the box: books, good, moon, cook, zoo.
- Complete the sentences together:
- The wolf howled at the moon. "Oo!"
- It is good fun to read books.
- The teacher said, "Good job!"
- My dad is a good cook.
- In the zoo, there are a lot of animals.
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Say a word from the page. Children hold up the "short oo" card or the "long oo" card.
Differentiation
- Support: Practise only "book" and "moon" until children can hear the difference
- Extension: Children say which sound they hear in "good" and "zoo"
Teaching Tips
- Say the two sounds side by side: "book" and "moon"
- Do not explain too much. The right sound comes with practice.
- Remind children that most short /oo/ words end in "k"
