Long Sound "u"

Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Skillford

Hello children! Welcome to today's lesson. Today we are going to learn about the long sound "u".

Let us say it together. You. Very good! This is the long "u" sound. We can hear it in "cube" and "blue".

The long "u" sound can be spelt in three different ways. The first way is "ue". The second way is "ew". The third way is "u" and "e" with a letter in the middle.

Let us read the "ue" words. Blue. True. Glue. Well done!

Now let us read the "ew" words. New. Chew. Screw. Can you hear the long "u"? Yes, you can!

Next, the words with "u" and "e". Cube. Mule. Tube. The letter "e" at the end helps the "u" to say its long sound.

Here is something fun to try. Roll a card into a tube and use it as a phone to say "blue", "true" and "glue" to a friend. You can also line up six cubes and count them, then take some away and say how many are left.

Now it is time for our activity. First we look at each picture and finish the word. Fuel. Blue. Fuse. Dune. Then we read the words and draw a line to the right sound. Blew, grew and threw have "ew". Glue, true and fuel have "ue". Cute, tube and volume have "u" and "e".

Let us quickly go over what we learned today. The long "u" sound can be spelt "ue", "ew" or "u" and "e". We say the word first, and then we look at the spelling.

Great job, everyone! Read the long "u" words again at home. See you next time!
