Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 15
Long Sound "u"
Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Skillford
Overview
In this lesson children learn that the long "u" sound can be spelt in three different ways: "ue", "ew" and "u_e". They read nine words aloud and listen for the long sound. Then they complete picture words with the missing letters and match words to their long "u" spelling.
Learning Objectives
- Say the long "u" sound clearly
- Read the "ue" words: blue, true, glue
- Read the "ew" words: new, chew, screw
- Read the "u_e" words: cube, mule, tube
- Complete picture words by writing the missing letters
- Draw a line from each word to its long "u" sound
Day 1: Three Ways to Spell Long "u" (35 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 28, three cards: "ue", "ew" and "u_e"
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Say "you" slowly and let children copy. Say "cube" and "blue" and listen for the long sound.
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Read the heading and the sentence: "The long 'u' sound can be spelt in three different ways."
- Read the instruction: "Read each word aloud and listen for the long sound."
- Read the "ue" words with the pictures: blue, true, glue. Children repeat each word.
- Read the "ew" words with the pictures: new, chew, screw. Children repeat each word.
- Read the "u_e" words with the pictures: cube, mule, tube. Children repeat each word.
- Follow the Teacher's Note: read the nine words aloud together first, then let learners read them again on their own, one group at a time.
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- STEAM Time (page 28):
- Arts: Roll a card into a tube and use it as a phone to say "blue", "true" and "glue" to a friend.
- Maths: Line up six cubes and count them, then take some away and say how many are left.
- Hold up a card ("ue", "ew" or "u_e"). Children say a word from the page with that spelling.
Differentiation
- Support: Read one row at a time and use the picture to remember each word
- Extension: Children say which of the nine words they can see in the classroom
Day 2: Activity Time (35 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 29, pencils
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Say the nine words from page 28. Children say "you" each time they hear the long "u" sound.
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Read the first instruction: "Read each picture, and complete the word by correctly spelling its long 'u' sound."
- Look at each picture, say the word, and write the missing letters together:
- fuel (the petrol pump picture): write ue
- blue (the blue splash): write ue
- fuse (the glass fuse): write u and e in the two empty boxes (u first, e last)
- dune (the sand dune): write u and e in the two empty boxes (u first, e last)
- Read the second instruction: "Read the words. Draw a line to the correct sound in the word."
- Read the nine words: cute, blew, tube, glue, grew, true, fuel, threw, volume.
- Children draw a line from each word to its sound:
- ew: blew, grew, threw
- ue: glue, true, fuel
- u_e: cute, tube, volume
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Read all the words from the page aloud together and listen for the long "u"
Differentiation
- Support: Say each word slowly with the child and point to the letters that make the long "u"
- Extension: Children think of one more word for each spelling and say it to a partner
Teaching Tips
- The letter "u" has a long sound of its own, spelt three ways on page 28
- Say the word first, then look at how the long "u" is spelt
- Let children say the words in groups before they say them one by one
