Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 14
Long Sound "o"
Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Skillford
Overview
In this lesson children learn that the long "o" sound can be spelt in three different ways: "oa", "ow" and "o_e". They read nine words aloud and listen for the long sound. Then they read a short song and underline the "ow" words, and match words to pictures and circle the letters that make the long "o" sound.
Learning Objectives
- Say the long "o" sound clearly
- Read the "oa" words: boat, toast, goat
- Read the "ow" words: bow, pillow, crow
- Read the "o_e" words: home, cone, rope
- Read the song "The Brown Cow" and underline the "ow" words
- Match words to pictures and circle the letters that make the long "o" sound
Day 1: Three Ways to Spell Long "o" (35 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 26, three cards: "oa", "ow" and "o_e"
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Make an "oh" sound with a round mouth. Children copy. Say "go" and "no" and listen for the long "o".
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Read the heading and the sentence: "The long 'o' sound can be spelt in three different ways."
- Read the instruction: "Read each word aloud and listen for the long sound."
- Read the "oa" words with the pictures: boat, toast, goat. Children repeat each word.
- Read the "ow" words with the pictures: bow, pillow, crow. Children repeat each word.
- Read the "o_e" words with the pictures: home, cone, rope. Children repeat each word.
- Ask children which pair or pattern they can see in each word.
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- STEAM Time (page 26):
- Science: Float a paper boat in a bowl of water, then blow on it. How far can you make it go?
- Engineering: Build a home from blocks with a window, and a road that goes up to the door.
- Hold up a card ("oa", "ow" or "o_e"). Children say a word from the page with that spelling.
Differentiation
- Support: Read one row at a time and use the picture to remember each word
- Extension: Children say a rhyming word for "boat", "home" or "crow"
Day 2: Activity Time (35 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 27, pencils, coloured pencils
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Say the nine words from page 26. Children make a round "o" shape with their mouths for each one.
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Read the first instruction: "Read the song and underline the 'ow' words."
- Read the song "The Brown Cow" together, one line at a time:
- The brown cow walks around the town,
- It wears a smile and never a frown.
- It sees a clown wearing a crown,
- The clown says, "Wow!" and sits down.
- The cow takes a bow and says, "Hello!"
- Then off to the green fields they go.
- Children underline the "ow" words: brown, cow, town, frown, clown, crown, Wow, down, bow
- Read the second instruction: "Match each word with its picture. Circle the letters that make the long o sound in each word."
- Read the six words: boat, hoe, soap, goat, toad, doe.
- Children draw a line from each word to its picture (the sailing boat, the garden hoe, the soap, the white goat, the green toad and the deer) and circle the letters that make the long "o":
- boat (oa)
- hoe (oe)
- soap (oa)
- goat (oa)
- toad (oa)
- doe (oe)
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Read the song again. Children stand up for each "ow" word they hear and take a bow at the end.
Differentiation
- Support: Read the song line by line with the child and point to each "ow" word
- Extension: Children say which word in the song is the same as the word "bow" on page 26
Teaching Tips
- The song has many "ow" words. Children only need to find the letters "ow".
- In the song the word "bow" has the long "o" sound, like the "bow" on page 26. Say it slowly so children can hear it.
- Say each word first, then look at how the long "o" is spelt
