Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 13
Long Sound "i"
Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Skillford
Overview
In this lesson children learn that the long "i" sound can be spelt in three different ways: "ie", "igh" and "i_e". They read nine words aloud and listen for the long sound. Then they colour the letters that spell a picture, write the word, and follow the long "i" words through a maze.
Learning Objectives
- Say the long "i" sound clearly
- Read the "ie" words: pie, tie, lie
- Read the "igh" words: light, right, night
- Read the "i_e" words: bike, lime, slide
- Colour the letters that spell a picture and write the word
- Find the words with the long "i" sound in a maze
Day 1: Three Ways to Spell Long "i" (35 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 24, three cards: "ie", "igh" and "i_e"
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Say "eye" slowly and let children copy. Say "pie" and "night" and listen for the same long "i".
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Read the heading and the sentence: "The long 'i' sound can be spelt in three different ways."
- Read the instruction: "Read each word aloud and listen for the long sound."
- Read the "ie" words with the pictures: pie, tie, lie. Children repeat each word.
- Read the "igh" words with the pictures: light, right, night. Children repeat each word.
- Read the "i_e" words with the pictures: bike, lime, slide. Children repeat each word.
- Follow the Teacher's Note: hold up each picture and let children say the word before you do. Then ask for other words with the same long "i" and write them on the board under the right spelling.
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- STEAM Time (page 24):
- Science: Shine a torch on a wall and make hand shadows. Say "light", "night" and "bright".
- Engineering: Make a kite from paper and string, then take it outside and see how high it will fly.
- Hold up a card ("ie", "igh" or "i_e"). Children say a word from the page with that spelling.
Differentiation
- Support: Read one row at a time and use only the pictures to remember each word
- Extension: Children say the three words with "i_e" and name the letter that sits at the end
Day 2: Activity Time (35 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 25, pencils, coloured pencils
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Say the nine words from page 24. Children hold up one finger for each word they hear with a long "i".
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Read the first instruction: "Colour the letters that spell the picture, then write the word."
- Picture 1 shows the word "lie". The letters in the box are l, t, i, e, s. Children colour l, i, e and write lie.
- Picture 2 shows the word "lime". The letters in the box are l, o, m, e, i. Children colour l, i, m, e and write lime.
- Read the second instruction: "Draw a line through the words that have the long 'i' sound to find your way through the maze."
- Read the maze words together. The long "i" words are: high, light, mile, fright, kite, bike, tile, right, tight, delight.
- The words with a short "i" sound are not on the path: hit, dig, wind.
- Children draw a line through the long "i" words from the start to the teapot house.
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Read the maze words aloud again and sort them into "long i" and "short i"
Differentiation
- Support: Read each maze word with the child before they draw the line
- Extension: Children sort the long "i" maze words into "igh" words and "i_e" words
Teaching Tips
- Say each word first, then look at how the long "i" is spelt
- Write new words that children give on the board under "ie", "igh" or "i_e"
- Practise the sound with the pictures before reading the letters
