Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 12
Long Sound "e"
Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Skillford
Overview
In this lesson children learn that the long "e" sound can be spelt in two different ways: "ee" and "ea". They read ten words aloud and listen for the long sound. Then they circle the "ee" words and write the missing letters to complete long "e" words.
Learning Objectives
- Say the long "e" sound clearly
- Read the "ee" words: bee, seed, queen, jeep, weep
- Read the "ea" words: eat, leaf, tea, sea, meat
- Find which letter pair ("ee" or "ea") is in each word
- Circle the words spelt with "ee"
- Write "ea" or "ee" to complete words
Day 1: Two Ways to Spell Long "e" (35 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 22, two cards: "ee" and "ea"
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Say "eee" in a long sound. Children copy. Say "bee" and "tea" slowly and let children hear the long "e".
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Read the heading and the sentence: "The long 'e' sound can be spelt in two different ways."
- Read the instruction: "Read each word aloud and listen for the long sound."
- Read the "ee" words with the pictures: bee, seed, queen, jeep, weep. Children repeat each word.
- Read the "ea" words with the pictures: eat, leaf, tea, sea, meat. Children repeat each word.
- Read the Teacher's Note idea: all ten words have the same long "e" sound, but two letter pairs make it.
- Ask: "Which pair can you see in this word, 'ee' or 'ea'?" Children point to the pair in each word.
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- STEAM Time (page 22):
- Science: Plant a bean seed in a cup, water it each day, and watch for the first green leaf.
- Maths: Count the bees on a picture card, then count the feet of three children standing up.
- Hold up the "ee" card or the "ea" card. Children say a word from the page with that pair.
Differentiation
- Support: Read only five words at a time, first the "ee" words and then the "ea" words
- Extension: Children think of one more word with the long "e" sound and say which pair it has
Day 2: Activity Time (35 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 23, pencils, a coloured pencil
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Say the ten words from page 22. Children clap once for each word.
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Read the first instruction: "Circle every word that is spelt with 'ee'."
- Read the twelve words together: jeep, clean, queen, seed, train, see, meat, feet, team, leaf, green, bread.
- Children circle the "ee" words: jeep, queen, seed, see, feet, green
- Read the second instruction: "Write ea, ee, or ey to complete the long e words below."
- Look at each picture, say the word, and write the missing letters together:
- ear (ea)
- three (ee)
- peas (ea)
- seat (ea)
- peach (ea)
- tree (ee)
- street (ee)
- bee (ee)
- queen (ee)
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Read all the completed words aloud together and listen for the long "e"
Differentiation
- Support: Say each picture word slowly and sound out the missing part with the child
- Extension: Children write two of the words on their own, without looking at the page
Teaching Tips
- The letter "e" has a long sound of its own, and two letter pairs make exactly the same sound: "ee" and "ea"
- Ask children which of the two pairs they can see in each word
- Say the word first, then write the pair
