Video Script -- Lesson 11
Long Sound "a"
Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Skillford
Hello children! Welcome to today's lesson. Today we are going to learn the long sound "a".
The long "a" sounds just like the letter "a". Listen. A. Cake. Can you hear it? Very good!
The long "a" sound can be spelt in three different ways. Today we will read words with all three spellings. Read each word aloud and listen for the long sound.
The first spelling is "a" and "i", written ai. Rain. Pail. Tail. Wait. Look at the pictures. A rain cloud. A red pail. A whale's tail. And a sign that says wait. Say them with me. Rain. Pail. Tail. Wait. Well done!
The next spelling is "a" and "y", written ay. Hay. Day. Tray. Play. Look at the pictures. A bale of hay. A calendar for the day. A tray. And a child on a slide at play. Say them with me. Hay. Day. Tray. Play. Great!
The last spelling is a, then a letter, then an "e". We write it a, underscore, e. Snake. Cake. Cage. Plate. Look at the pictures. A snake. A cake. A cage. And a plate. The "e" at the end is silent, but it helps the "a" say its name. Say them with me. Snake. Cake. Cage. Plate. Excellent!
Now it is Activity Time. Circle the word that matches the picture. The first picture is a snake. Is it snake or snail? It is snake. The next picture is hay. Is it hay or nail? Now a cake. Is it cake or bake? Then a tray. Is it rain or tray? Next is tape. Is it tape or wait? And last, a tail. Is it pain or tail? Say each word slowly and listen for the long "a".
Now write six words of your own under ai, ay and a_e. Use the words on the page to help you. Read your words aloud when you have finished.
Here are two fun ideas. Leave a tray of water in the sun. At play time, go and look at it. Where did the water go? You can also paint a rainy day on a paper plate, and write the word rain under the cloud.
Let us quickly go over what we learned today. The long "a" sound can be spelt in three ways: ai, ay and a_e.
Great job, everyone! See you next time!
