Long Vowel Sounds

Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Skillford

Hello children! Welcome to today's lesson. Today we are going to learn about long vowel sounds.

A long vowel says its own name. Listen to the word cake. The long "a" in cake sounds exactly like the letter "a". A, cake. Can you hear it? Very good!

Today we are going to sing a verse for each long vowel. Let us read each one first, and then we will sing it together.

The long "A" verse. Yes, that's me! I see a cat. I see a hat. I can run and play. I like to laugh all day. Listen for the long "a" in play and day.

The long "E" verse. Yes, that's me! I see a bee. The bee is near a tree. I can read. I like tea. Listen for the long "e" in bee, tree and tea.

The long "I" verse. Yes, that's me! I see a kite. The kite is high. I ride my bike. I like to fly. Listen for the long "i" in kite, high, bike and fly.

The long "O" verse. Yes, that's me! I see a goat. I see a boat. I can row. I see the snow. Listen for the long "o" in goat, boat, row and snow.

And the long "U" verse. Yes, that's me! I see the moon. I sing a tune. I love you. I play with you. Listen for the long "u" in tune.

Now let us sing each verse together, and put a hand up every time you hear a long vowel. Well done!

Here are two fun ideas. Ask a grown-up to record you singing one verse, and then play it back and put your hand up at every long vowel. Or roll playdough into a cube and a tube. Say both words. Can you hear the long "u"?

Let us quickly go over what we learned today. A long vowel says its own name. We can hear long vowels in words like cake, bee, kite, goat and tune.

Great job, everyone! Sing the verses with your friends. See you next time!
