Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 10
Long Vowel Sounds
Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Skillford
Overview
In this lesson children learn that a long vowel says its own name. The long "a" in "cake" sounds exactly like the letter "a". Children sing five verses together, one for each long vowel: long "A", long "E", long "I", long "O" and long "U". Each verse starts with "Yes, that's me!"
Learning Objectives
- Know that a long vowel says its own name
- Hear the long "a" in "cake"
- Sing and read the five long vowel verses
- Spot the long vowel spellings in each verse
Day 1: Sing the Long Vowels (35 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 19, coloured pencils, playdough (for the STEAM line)
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Say the five vowels together: a, e, i, o, u. Tell children that today each vowel will say its own name.
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Read the rule: "A long vowel says its own name. The long 'a' in 'cake' sounds exactly like the letter 'a'."
- Read the instruction: "Sing each verse together." Read each verse aloud first, then sing it through with children joining in:
- Long "A": Yes, that's me! I see a cat. I see a hat. I can run and play. I like to laugh all day.
- Long "E": Yes, that's me! I see a bee. The bee is near a tree. I can read. I like tea.
- Long "I": Yes, that's me! I see a kite. The kite is high. I ride my bike. I like to fly.
- Long "O": Yes, that's me! I see a goat. I see a boat. I can row. I see the snow.
- Long "U": Yes, that's me! I see the moon. I sing a tune. I love you. I play with you.
- Colour the long-vowel spellings in each verse. Listen for the long "a" in "play" and "day", the long "e" in "bee", "tree" and "tea", the long "i" in "kite", "high", "bike" and "fly", the long "o" in "goat", "boat", "row" and "snow", and the long "u" in "tune".
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- STEAM (Technology): Record the class singing one verse, play it back, and put a hand up at every long vowel
- STEAM (Arts): Roll playdough into a cube and a tube, then say both words and listen for the long "u"
Differentiation
- Support: Sing one verse a day and listen for just one long vowel word
- Extension: Children say another word that has the same long vowel sound as a word in the verse
Teaching Tips
- Read each verse aloud first, then sing it through with learners joining in
- A long vowel says its own name
- Colour the long-vowel spellings in each verse, one vowel at a time
