Short Sound "u"

Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Skillford

Hello children! Welcome to today's lesson. Today we are going to learn the short sound "u".

Your mouth barely opens at all, and the short sound "u" is over at once. U, u, u. It is the sound in mug and in sun. Say it with me. Very good!

We say each sound, and then we push the sounds together into one word. Let us try the first family. U, b. Ub. C, ub. Cub. H, ub. Hub. R, ub. Rub. S, ub. Sub. Well done!

Now the next family. Ug. B, ug. Bug. M, ug. Mug. J, ug. Jug. R, ug. Rug. Great!

The next family is um. D, um. Dum. G, um. Gum. S, um. Sum. T, um. Tum. Very good!

And the last family is un. B, un. Bun. F, un. Fun. R, un. Run. S, un. Sun. Excellent! Remember to hold the "u" each time.

Now let us read some sentences. A bug is on the mug. A cub is in the tub. A bun has nuts. A cub is on the rug. Good reading!

Here is an activity. Join each word to its picture, and then write the word on the line. The words are hug, bug, cut, cup, bun and sun. Look at the pictures. There is a sun. There is a bun. There is a cup. Someone is cutting paper with scissors. There is a bug. And two children are giving each other a hug. Draw a line from each word to its picture.

Now read both sentences and tick the one that is true. Look at the hut. There is a jug in the hut, or there is a bun in the hut? Look at the picture carefully. Look at the rug. A bug is on the rug, or a tub is on the rug? Look at the cub. The cub has a nut, or the cub has a mug? And look at the pup. This pup can run, or this bud can run? Tick the true sentence each time.

Here is our last activity. Say each picture, and then write the vowel that is missing. Can, dog, fig, box, fan, mug, zip, van and pot. Listen for the middle sound, and write the vowel.

Here is a fun idea. Fill a cup and a mug with water. Which one holds more? Pour one into the other and see. You can also spell "bug" with letter blocks, swap the "b" for an "m" to read "mug", and keep going.

Let us quickly go over what we learned today. The short sound "u" is over at once when your mouth barely opens. We say each sound and push the sounds together into one word.

Great job, everyone! See you next time!
