Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 8
Short Sound "o"
Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Skillford
Overview
In this lesson children learn the short sound "o". Your mouth opens wide and round, and the short sound "o" comes out fast. Children say each sound, then push the sounds together into one word, using four word families: od, og, ot and ox. They read four sentences and then complete the activities on page 15.
Learning Objectives
- Say the short "o" sound
- Read the word families od, og, ot and ox
- Push sounds together into words like "rod", "dog", "hot" and "box"
- Read short sentences with short "o" words
- Circle the letters that spell a picture, write the word, and follow each path to a word
Day 1: Short "o" Word Families (35 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 14, a ball, a plank and two boxes (for the STEAM line)
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Open your mouth wide and round and say the short "o" sound. Children copy.
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Read: "Your mouth opens wide and round, and the short sound 'o' comes out fast."
- Read the rule box: "Say each sound, then push them together into one word."
- Read the four word families, saying each sound and then the whole word:
- od: cod, nod, pod, rod
- og: dog, fog, jog, log
- ot: cot, dot, hot, pot
- ox: box, fox, lox, pox
- Say each short "o" word and have children say it back. Point at the "o" every time and hold the sound.
- Read the four sentences at the foot of the page:
- A dog is on the log.
- Bob has an ox.
- A dot is on the pot.
- A fox is on the box.
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Try the tongue twister from the page together: "The fox jumps onto the box"
- STEAM (Science): Roll a ball down a plank propped on one box, then on two boxes. When is it faster?
- STEAM (Technology): In a tablet matching game, drag the pictures of a dog, a pot and a log onto their words
Differentiation
- Support: Practise one family at a time, such as "og": dog, fog, jog, log
- Extension: Children make new words by changing the first letter in a family
Day 2: Activity Time (35 minutes)

Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Say a family, such as "ot". Children call out words from it: cot, dot, hot, pot.
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Activity 1: "Circle the letters that spell the picture, then write the word."
- The pictures show a fish, a boy jogging, a red dot and a girl with red spots

- Activity 2: "Follow each path and write the word at the end of it."
