Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 7
Short Sound "i"
Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Skillford
Overview
In this lesson children learn the short sound "i". Your lips pull back a little and the short sound "i" is over in a flash. Children say each sound, then push the sounds together into one word, using four word families: id, ig, in and it. They read four sentences and then circle the pictures that have the short "i" sound.
Learning Objectives
- Say the short "i" sound
- Read the word families id, ig, in and it
- Push sounds together into words like "lid", "big", "pin" and "sit"
- Read short sentences with short "i" words
- Circle the pictures that have the short "i" sound
Day 1: Short "i" Word Families (35 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 12, letter blocks
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Pull your lips back a little and say the short "i" sound. Children copy.
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Read: "Your lips pull back a little and the short sound 'i' is over in a flash."
- Read the rule box: "Say each sound, then push them together into one word."
- Read the four word families, saying each sound and then the whole word:
- id: bid, did, kid, lid
- ig: big, dig, fig, wig
- in: bin, fin, pin, win
- it: bit, fit, hit, sit
- Say the three sounds of a short "i" word one at a time, /p/ /i/ /n/, and blend them back into "pin". Work through the other words the same way.
- Read the four sentences at the foot of the page:
- Bill is ill.
- Jin wins a ring.
- The wig fits.
- The bin is big.
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Give children a word such as "fig" and ask for one that rhymes with it
- STEAM (Science): Put a stick, a tin and a lid in a tub of water. Which ones sink and which ones float?
- STEAM (Engineering): Spell "sit" with letter blocks, swap the "s" for an "f" to read "fit", and keep going
Differentiation
- Support: Practise one family at a time, such as "ig": big, dig, fig, wig
- Extension: Children make new words by changing the first letter in a family
Day 2: Activity Time (35 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 13, pencils or crayons
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Say a family, such as "in". Children call out words from it: bin, fin, pin, win.
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Read the instruction: "Circle the pictures that have the short 'i' sound."
- Say the name of each picture aloud with the children:
- fin, bed, bin
- fan, keg, zip
- sip, jam, fig
- Listen for the short "i" in the middle of each word
- Circle the pictures with the short "i": fin, bin, zip, sip and fig
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Read the short "i" words aloud together, holding the "i" sound each time
Differentiation
- Support: Say each word slowly, sound by sound, before deciding
- Extension: Children say a rhyming word for each picture they circled
Teaching Tips
- Say the three sounds of a word one at a time and let learners blend them back
- Give a word such as "fig" and ask for one that rhymes with it
